'66 BJ8 - I've decided to replace all expansion plugs with the motor in the car. As far as the scope of the work, I'm pretty clear on what needs to be done. But I'm not sure if once the air cleaners are removed, the carbs and manifold can be removed as a single unit or do they need to be separated before removal? No point in having bits and pieces all over the garage floor if not necessary.
And once the upper exhaust has been disconnected, do I have easier access to the lower manifold bolts? It's very difficult to see that part of the manifold with an inspection light and mirror. Thanks!

Randy, Mine is a BN4 sooo the detail may be a bit different.

Assuming the exhaust header pipe(s) are disconnected from the exhaust manifold..

I have found that the intake manifold is pretty hard to remove with the carbs in place. I remove both carbs as a unit from the manifold, then remove the heat shield. This gives you access to the manifold bolts. There are two that a a pain to get to; the front lower and the rear lower but they are accessible with a open end wrench for the front and a deep socket with a short extension for the rear; mostly by the braille method. All this work is by leaning over the LF fender/wing...

Once the intake manifold is off, access to the exhaust manifold is pretty easy. Once the exhaust manifold is off, access to the freeze/expansion plugs should be straightforward.

randy i took both the intake manifold and exhaust off my car this past monday,id decided to break it all down from the air cleaners,linkage,carbs,intake manifold,exhaust dowm pipes then exhaust manifolds,seemed much easier that way for me, theres also a couple of bolts that go through the top of the intake manifold into the top of the exhaust manifold make sure you remove these or youll not be able to take apart either,if your bj8 has the left side horn mounted as my 63bj7 youll have to remove it to try to remove the fwd. carb.if you need to, take pictures as you go along so you wont get un-nurved when your looking at all the suff on your work bench,its not that difficult. one word of caution,lube up the nuts holding the exhaust down pipes to the manifold with liquid wrench,many snapped studs and cracked flanges accure at this point,id detected an exhaust leak and found blow by out the sides of my down pipes the previous owner had done just that cracked both flanges all the studs were broken and removed and fitted with only two through bolts per down pipe,im welding them up now,a new single exhaust manifold is about $300.00 ea. while you have the carbs. off check the throttle shafts for play,i found excessive play in mine and im having joe curto in queens n.y. rebush them as i type this,take your time,good luck. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/savewave.gif
