Re dying old carpets

The black carpets in my TR3 are really old and faded. Other than the fading they are in good condition and I'd rather not buy a whole new set just because the ones I have are faded. Has anybody re-dyed their carpets? Any suggestions on what type of dye I should use on them? Here's a pic of the carpets, they're faded so much they look almost purple. Thanks for any help.

Yes check your local parts store the brand name is Duplicolor
Follow the instructions and it will do a creditable job--Keoke

Is that like the spray on dye that they sell to redye vinyl and leather seats?

I'll second Keoke's comment. Also, go over it with a stiff brush afterwards to get the carpet to separate strands correctly.

I tries using spray on carpet dye in grey (on faded UV damaged carpet) and the results were not acceptable -- color looked very flat, fake and, well, like a dye-job.

On the other hand, I have dyed (green) carpet black using nothing more than a can of Krylon and it looked fine. I think black is a much easier color to make look good. Anyway, you don't have much to lose by trying.

I found this web site. https://www.dyepro.com/ they have a video on it showing how their prodic works. The full dye Kits are rather expensive but if you just buy the dyes their not too bad. The things supplied in the kit look like things most people have laying around the garage. Anyways hope this helps.

Check your local phone directory as some of the upholstery companies or rug sellers or cleaners offer dying services for large rugs etc

Thanks for the suggestions, some good ideas. I've thought of a new interior but that's something for down the road. Probably after I get some issues with the body repaired. The bottom rear of both front fenders and the sills and rear apron need attention. If I do get a new interior I'm thinking of a tan interior, not the original color, but I've always thought that red & honey tan is a nice color combination.

Now I wish it would stop raining around here so I can get it out and drive it!

Unless you're a whole lot neater than I am, you may still want black carpet with the tan interior. IMO, tan carpets look great, but not for very long.
