T-Series Rant about turn signal and headlight switch

Well Alan T, maybe we can overcome that defugilty. I would if it already does not have one add a relay to the headlight circuit. Then the switch will only see the very lite current load of the relay and keep on keepin on.--Fwiw--Keoke

Keoke...I just grabbed a NOS switch off the shelf and installed it and it works fine. The repro switch rocker part would not flip over all the way once installed.

Alan T

Yes AlanT, the NOS parts are a zillion times better than the after market junk. But with a relay that NOS switch will follow you to the grave,it will never fail again. I hope Lucas didn't hear me say that. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif---Keoke

No good at all. So you return it and order two. It's like a Ferrari and the repair shop. One turn stalk in the car and one in the mail at all times.

I recently refurbished my heater fan switch using parts from various other old switches I had laying around the shop. I did this after buying a new Chinese switch that lasted a total of one click before exploding into pieces. Never again. I just rebuild mine now. Usually the thing that goes bad with switches is that the contacts just get dirty and they quit working. If the switch has lost it's snap, it's likely that the switch got dirty and corroded and someone forced the mechanism one way or the other and the internal spring was forced from its seat. If you're lucky, the spring is still in there. If not, you can rob a spring from any other switch and replace it. I usually clean the contacts with contact cleaner and shine them up with fine emery cloth. Use plenty of dielectric grease or Vaseline when you reassemble them and they'll last for many more years. Good luck with your battle against the almighty Lucas. Sometimes we win. Sometimes we don't. By the way, the new switches are total junk.

In any case that B above is awsum.

Thanks Jack! It's my newly done '69. I've paraded it across the other site several times since I finished it back in April of this year, but have not posted pics here until now. Here's a couple more:

Beautiful---but, why'd you leave those neat side reflectors off?

Tony,
I just prefer the cleaner look of the early cars sans reflectors and side marker lights. As you can see, I also ditched the overriders which, in my opinion, detract from the beautiful lines of these cars as well. I am not a stickler on originality. The paint is a GM color- '05 Corvette Precision Red. Biscuit was not an interior option in '69 either. Clear indicators are not correct. I could go on and on. The only thing that gives this car away as a '69 is the head rests. I kept them where most folks just pull them off and chunk them. I wanted something to say that it's a '69. I built the car the way I wanted it. That's all that really matters to me. I love the little car and I've enjoyed driving it since it's been finished. My TR6 is getting a bit jealous though. Too many cars....too little time.

I was just going to compliment the lack of clunky side markers! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

The triple wipers and mirror configuration also suggest the approximate year. Gotta do something about that missing shifter boot and trim ring now! ;D

Hey, I love it just like it is!! Just wondered...now, do you still have the reflectors? & do you want to part with them?

Yeah Steve,

It's been taken care of. When that interior photo was taken, the carpets were just laid into place (including the tunnel piece) and the seats were just sitting loose in the floor. Notice that there was no center console either. It's all there now, bolted down and serving me quite well. Again, thanks for the compliments guys. I didn't mean to hijack the thread. For what it's worth, my turn signal switch is new and it's functioning properly. I guess I got lucky. It came from Gordon at the B-Hive. I'm sure it's the same as the one Moss sells. Gordon does a good job of weeding out the junk. If you order a part that he feels is of questionable quality, he'll warn you. He warned me about the heater fan switch, but I decided to take my chances and order it anyway. Now I know better. The originals are of far better quality. Rebuild them. It's not that hard to do.

Dave

No Tony.

The reflectors were missing when I got the car as were the side moldings and a bunch of other stuff. I've been told that the side moldings were hard to find several years ago (when the car was last painted) so the PO probably couldn't replace them. The holes had been bondoed over. I stripped all the bondo off and welded up the reflector holes. Are the reflectors unobtanium? I never even tried to find them because I planned on leaving them off.

Dave

Looks like new, hope mine comes out as well.

Steve,

I've never seen an MGB that didn't have a center console. Perhaps you were referring to the tunnel console in which case my car does not have one either. Although the car did have an aftermarket tunnel console and arm rest. I think it was an Amco. It had a little clock in it and a speaker at the rear behind the arm rest.

Dave

Oh, youre right! I thought you meant the console which goes over the tunnel. My GT does have one but it's a period Amco unit. I prefer the look without, but the console suits the GT nicely.

That red B is really sharp.

What I noticed on my old Lucas headlamp switch was that the contacts had become dirty and slightly flattened over time. I was able to disassemble and clean it a few times, but the last time it seemed to be a bit loose, like I'd taken it apart too much. That's why I bought the one that came in the PWB.

How do you add a relay to the headlight circuit on a B?

Thank you,
