Randy Forbes up-date

For those of you who are worrying about frequent contributor Randy Forbes, who lives in the Sarasota/Bradenton area--I have been in touch with him and he wisely evacuated to a safer location.

I hope that all those in the path of Irma will be safe, and a "speedy recovery" to them as well as those who got nailed by Harvey.

Re: Randy Forbes up-date

Thanks for the update Michael, glad Randy is safely away from the main path.

Re: Randy Forbes up-date

Glad to hear that.

I own a couple townhouses in Vero Beach--'inherited' from an ex-girlfriend (long story)--so it looks like I dodged the major part of the bullet (for now). Now to start worrying about Jose. Our occasional earthquakes seem like mere inconveniences compared to hurricanes.

Re: Randy Forbes up-date

OH Man that is great news glad to hear he is alright.

Re: Randy Forbes up-date

Thanks guys!!

We're currently in Demopolis, Alabama__no, I never heard of it either__but as far as being a choice destination point, you go where you can get a room! The Ritz, it is not ;)

Fingers crossed, and prayers for our friends and neighbors that are riding it out.

This is only the second time in almost 40 years that I left the Healey in the garage when high-tailing it from a hurricane. The last time was 25 yrs ago after Andrew cut a path through South Florida, and made another landfall in Morgan City, Louisiana, not all that far from where I lived at the time. I didn't regret that decision either ;

Again, my thanks, and I'll be sure to check in again once we can get back home (and depending how long we're cooped up, I might be contributing to every thread on the forum...).

Re: Randy Forbes up-date

Some friends of mine from Miami live in one of the mandatory evacuation zones so on Thursday they drove up to Brandon, FL where they found a room. As it turns out Irma largely gave Miami a pass and now has them in its crosshairs. I learned a long time ago that very often what seems like intelligence is often no more than good luck.

Re: Randy Forbes up-date

Randy, Demopolis, AL is the home of one of the Foster Farms Corndog plants. I spent a few weeks at the plant 15 years ago and although the town is pretty rural, the people were wonderful. First time I had ever experienced Southern hospitality. Glad you're safe.

Thanks!

Coincidentally, we had about an hour to kill before our room was ready, so upon taking a drive through the town, we homed in on the Sonic Drive-In. My go to Sonic meal__comfort food, if you will__is a corndog, tator-tots with chili & cheese, and a vanilla malt. Being as it was in the south, fried pickles were also on the menu, so Sue ordered those too.

Probably best if you DON'T tell me what you witnessed in the corndog plant...

(I've worked in many different industries / processing plants myself, and peeking behind the curtain has its downside, lol)

Southern Hospitality is indeed very real; I lived twenty (20) years in southern Louisiana, and they may well make fun of you for being a Yankee, but they'll be taking extraordinarily good care of you while they're doing it! Going a bit further west & south, the Acadians ('cajuns) are my favorite people of all__and the best cooks!

Re: Randy Forbes up-date

It's good to know that you got out of there Randy. My son is toughing it out but he's north east of your place. A little higher and slightly dryer. They don't have power. No AC and warm beer. Other than putting up with some smelly buddies for a few days they don't have much to complain about.

Good deal, hope he's doing okay, and added to his repertoire of good beer-drinking stories

Got a text 1/2-hour ago or so, that the UPS on the Sports Cars Plus, LLC server is back online, so Healey pictures available for everyone after a brief interruption in service (note: the utility company__and they told people in advance__that they might/would cut off the power prior to allowing damage to occur. The advantage being that fewer xmfrs would need to be replaced if they didn't blowup (think of it as crossed wires when the battery is out of your Healey = no smoke!).

In any case, things certainly could've been a lot worse! We're thankful that our (braver than us) neighbors all came out on the sunny side of the storm, and our heartfelt thought for those people in areas in areas that were hit much harder, like in the Florida Keys.

I grabbed this screenshot while watching a video submitted by Storm Chasers; the wipers in the up position could lead one to believe that this car was being driven when impacted (I have no information to support that, the car could've been shut off with the wipers energized and at the top of their stroke too).
