Radio Static

I have a 10-15 year old am/fm radio and an MP3 player in my BJ8. After having the tranny pulled for gasket and seal replacement and the passenger compartment redone this winter I finally got it back. I'm now getting static over the sound system in time with engine revs. Didn't have it before.

I have a Petronix ignition. I've installed a new coil, rotor and plugs. No change. I have a side mount distributor and can't find bumble bee wire in any local stores.

Before ordering ignition wires, I'm wondering if there's a condensor bad or missing somewhere. Problem is, I don't know where to look. I'd appreciate any advice I can get.

Ist look at the Chassis to engine ground strap. Make certain it is tight,in good condition and clean at both fixing ends. Further ,Make sure the connection at the engine is made to the bottom bolt attaching the starter to the bellhousing.

Should this fail to correct the problem you can:
1] Install a line filter on the radio's main power lead.
2] Purchase special sparking plug wires that filter the ignition noise out.

P.S. Makesure you have radio supressor type spark plugs installed.

If the change occurred immediately after the transmission repair, then I would bet the ground strap. Check for paint under the strap's connection. Also check the power feed connection on the radio and make sure it is solid.

Is the static sound like a hmmmm, and consistent with the RPM? That would be the ignition interference. The inline filters work well if you can't trace it and give up. Just make sure your ground strap is good or that may cause other gremlins.

Thanks Keoke and SideShifter,

I'll definitely check the groundstrap before doing anything else.

The sound is a distinct, rapid popping noise that speeds up when I rev the engine.

Sounds like interference with the ignition, but I would still check the ground and also the radio connections. Some of the wires could have been "bumped" or pulled with the removal of the tranny cover.
