Radio CD Player Suggestions

My '64 MGB has an 80s era AM/FM Cassette player in the dash that is near death (tape player doesn't work, radio is malfunctioning). I like having a radio. I replaced the rear speakers when I got the car (side panels). The one in the front probably needs to be replaced, too. Anyway, I want a new inexpensive AM/FM CD player that doesn't look like it belongs on Battlestar Gallactica. I am leary of buying a used 20+ year old radio (plus no CD) on e-bay.

Anyone have any suggestions? sources? experiences? pictures?

I threw down $99 at Circuit City and they installed a Sony CD/Radio with an MP3 plug in, no messing around, they did it right there. It's decent enough that it's what you expect from Sony, but not like it belongs on Battlestar Gallactica.

Mine is getting to be a few years old, but there's likely to be something similar out there. I bought a Kenwood based on the ability to make it virtually invisible. The system has am/fm/cd/mp3-cd and a folding faceplate.

My notes on the installation are here.

...and here's how it looks when switched off:

Nice clean install, Scotty!

Shinsen, try local flea markets. Paid all of $20 for each of mine.

"Audio sound quality" and "LBC" are generally not thought of as having much in common anyhow, IMO. If all the buttons work and it has two channels, it's a winner. Spend the real money on an exhaust or suchlike. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

I vote for flea market buy too. I've seen new ones sell for less that $75.00 and I actually have one in my 79B that I paid $50.00 for. Plays CD/s and like you said doesn't look like it is planned for the 25th century.

Just my two cents /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

I agree with that one too... I planned to put an amp in this installation but never did. I just wanted something that I could get local news (don't have an AM antenna though, I used a mag-mount HF antenna behind the seats, that's what the pig-tail on the right is for) and something that would play some music. This set up worked great for all that and it sounds great, but it isn't going to blast anyone out of the car.

When I lived in Anchorage I spent a lot of money on a fine system for my MGC. It's a great car to park & listen to music, what better environment?
Unfortunately after I moved back to Seattle I learned it is very easy to open up a locked MG, I found out when all my high end stuff was stolen.
Since then I've opted for whatever was factory installed in my cars. In the case of my MG's - nothing.

I am tempted to buy something for my MGBGT, I wont spend a lot of money but I will try to get something "good enough".
It has to have an SD & USB slot, it would be nice if it had the ability to play from an external hard drive. I would put a couple box 6x9 speakers in the back, a sub installed (maybe two - one on each side in those cavities back beside the trunk). Then a couple 4 or 5 inch speakers up front.
Nothing fancy. It should have the capabilities above plus it would be nice if it played mp3's on DVD.
I saw something like this on Ebay searching for 'dvd mp3 sd usb' in automotive (ebay motors).

I have one of those kenwood flipface radios... got it from a friend for free when it stopped working... $14 for a new ribbon cable and good as new. I'll have to look into the MG plate for mine.
