I am near the point in my restoration where I need to add coolant to my radiator. The engine is newly rebuilt so I am starting with an empty system. Is there something that is better than the 50/50 water and Prestone that I used many years ago when the engine was last run? Is tap water OK to use or should I consider using something like distilled water or the stuff run through reverse osmosis at my local supermarket? Living in Ohio I have to take winter temperatures into consideration.
 
Just as always 50 50 water prestone.
 
Since you're starting with a fresh system you could look into running the latest high-tech stuff on the market. Evans NPG Waterless coolant. Much higher boiling point, much lower freezing point, less cavitation and can run at lower pressure effectively.

Boils 375°F @ 0 psi
Freezes -40°F
Viscosity 2.3cp @ 212°F
Surface Tension 44dyn/cm

Of course, all new technology comes at a price. At $30+ per gallon they aren't exactly giving this stuff away! But at lest you'll save the $27+ on the radiator and engine flushing solution! :wink:

They also have a mixture (NPG-R) that's intended for you racers out there. I haven't used any personally but I started looking into it for my turbo project. A more effective coolant on a turbo engine could yield large gains.
