radiator fan shroud

If you want to eliminate the cardboard shroud in front of the TR6 radiator - increase air flow around the engine - but maintain fan draw - I have installed a radiator fan shroud from a toyota PICKUP 84-95 gas truck - its black poly and is a very close fit to the TR6 radiator dimensions. I cut out the upper and lower hose connection area (a 45 degree cut) with a sawzall and trimmed out the fan circle to be flat so it does not hit the engine side. Just screwed it to the flanges on the radiator sides with self tapping screws. Works amazing! - I live in SW florida - its hot here in the summer - my temp gauge does not move in traffic - stopped at lights - you name it. Best part - it costs under 20 bucks - I got it online at carpartswholesale - but any aftermarket place should be able to get it. Much cheaper alternate to electric fans - and if you want to route a ram to the carbs - the engine bay area is wide open.

Not a bad idea but no real reason to remove the front shroud. The front shroud feeds the air directly through the radiator, the rear shroud can help direct the air away from the radiator. Without the front shield, more air will go around your radiator than through it. Sitting in traffic it wouldn't be a detriment but on a long trip you might see cooling issues at speed.

The best of both worlds is to have both. VB used to sell one specifically for the TR6. I have that one. The front shroud keeps the rest of my engine bay pretty clean too. Which I like. Good tip on getting a shroud around the fan though.

Fitting a ram-air system with a front shroud really isn't that difficult either.

Not terribly hard to keep it that way if you keep after it either.

we had the Colorado Conclave in Denver (Arvada) last weekend and it rained most of the way there and for 3 hours after I arrived. When it stopped raining I shammied the car and lifted the bonnet. The people standing around when I opened the bonnet were amazed at how clean the engine bay was even after driving through all that rain. A quick wipe down and it was back to being immaculate. :wink:
 
You guys really need to stop posting pictures of your engine bays!

Really impressive guys - can only imagine how much time and effort went into getting them into that condition.
 
With regard to the radiator shroud, I found that it actually helped cool more in traffic than when on the run.. Just a theory but I believe that w/o the shroud, the fan draws air from all around as well as thru the radiator. With the shroud, more of the air is funneled thru the radiator by the fan.
When you are moving along there seems to be enough air coming in from all directions to keep things at normal temperatures without the shroud.
At least that's what my experiement revealed earlier this Summer.

This does not surprise me. I was playing around with a shroud similar to yours on my Herald and found that there was a HUGE difference in the amount of air pulled through the radiator even at idle. I haven't gotten around to making a permanent shroud yet but it will be similar to what you have.
 
HI Allen,

This is a bit off topic but I was wondering if you new the specifics of which jets and needles you have in your Mikunis? I have a set on my 6 that I bought from a different supplier and he was no help in setting them up. I just want to compare notes.
 
Just got back from a 550 mile round trip to Stowe were I got to look at over 600 cars with many engine bays that you could perform surgery on or in! The car ran great and never missed a beat on the entire trip. What a great show....pictures tomorrow.

The secret to having a clean engine bay is lucking out like I did and buy a car from a guy who had just detailed the bay while he had the engine and tranny out for a re-build! It was easy to keep clean over the past 11 years and then last winter while I had the engine and tranny out, all I had to do was a little touch-up work.
