Seems the reproduction radiator caps available are of poor quality. I have purchased 3 over the last 4 years and they have all rusted inside and brake apart. (I'm buying the ones that have stamped, made in England, on them).

Does NAPA sell a cap I can use for my 64 BJ8. If so, what is the part number.
Or if another cap will fit, what brand and model number.

As always, I appreciate the help.

I think you can take your cap in to any good parts house and have it replaced with a Stant model.
 
Roger, what part is rusting? It should not be exposed to moisture as there is a tight fitting rubber seal. Are you getting the right length? The original is a longer (fits in deeper). Try BCS in Stockton. I bought one from them 10 years ago and it still looks pristine. And it has the brass rivet as the original.

Rust where the stem meets the underside of the top of the cap. Most likely the large rivet.

Aftermarket caps, the "brass rivet" looks brass but if you polish it, it is not brass. That's where it's rusted and brakes apart.

As far as the right part, yes. Correct length (the longer one), correct cap as all the sellers say it is.

I've order a better cap (Stant 10206), no more of these cheap reproductions.
I'll put on the Made in England reproduction for the car show. I just can't rely on the reproduction caps.

TH, I suggest you remove your cap every once in a while and see how it's holding up. All I did was twist the cap to check the fluid, and no surprise, it broke.

Thanks, Roger. I always check the fluid level before every drive along with the oil and other fluids. Are you showing any rust in the coolant?

Interesting - I never suspected the rivets were brass-plated.

Having said that, haven't experienced the rust failure of the cap. Wonder if there's something wrong with your coolant mixture. I've used these caps for years and they've worked well for me.

En them copper ones in the hood buffers are plated too.

Course now I didn't know that Roger fellah only had a rivet problem.

So all he has to do is:

Drill out the rusty rivet en replace it with a real brass one in his spare time.:glee:
 
These things are available from any UK Motor factors for very little money and normally they last for years. I assume you're using an anti freeze and corrosion inhibitor?
 
The radiator was upgraded with a better core (original brass top kept) and the system gets flushed every once in a while. Antifreeze is 50/50 mixture.
