Am in the "middle" of flushing the cooling system on SWMBO's MGB. First step was force-flush the block and the rad with the garden hose (Also "hers"-- another story). Thermostat housing off, t-stat out and full pressure thru the block and heater core. Plenty of 'dark matter' out of both. Same with the rad. This is a "three-core" we had done back in '96 or so.
Step next: drain all and reassemble. "Where's those gasket sets?!" --- Not a t-stat gasket to be found. *mumble-mumble*
Take time to clean the t-stat housing surfaces and fab a gasket from raw material, assemble all, pour in some "GUNK" rad flush stuff and top it off with water. Starts like it was run yesterday (sat two weeks since last light-off), takes a while to get up to temp. Me sittin' in, reminiscin' about the miles wut have passed under me butt in MGB's...
Now waiting a bit to let 'er cool so's I can drain and flush it out again with the hose before I put the coolant mix in. I would rather flush it with "fresh" water once more than just drain it and toss the coolant in there. The second flushing will carry away or dilute what residual chemistry there may be left in the system. Just precautionary on my part, but that's the way I am.
