Rack mounting

In an earlier thread it was mentioned that there should be spacer(?) placed between the rack mount and the... ? to allow the column to match up correctly. I didn't do that and have a perfect match..."like a greased pig" Sooo the question is do I need that spacer for another reason?

The spacer goes on the side opposite the steering column to align the pinion with the steering column. maybe there is enough slop in the whole system that it is not that critical??
