Rack and pinion, oil or grease?

Hi,
After re-assembling my Tr4 steering rack, I don't know what to do.
Fill it up with hypiod 90 oil as the technician in the TR-parts store told me, or doing what the workshop manual says and use an couple of stokes with the greasepistol.
Please, your advice guys.
Thanks Ed.

I was a little hesitant to reply because I do not have rack and pinion but the oil is recommended for TR3 steering boxes. I used a plentiful amount of grease on the bearings and worm gear and then added the oil to the steering box of my car.

TR4,5,250,6 racks are greased.

I used to grease the rack, but I was put in the wrong direction by that fellow.
Thanks for helping me.

Ed

You have a TR Parts store that you can just go to and pick (necessary of course) stuff from ??? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
Boy am I envious !!

Hi,

Yes, grease it is. Be a little careful not to get too much in there. Granted, it would take a lot, there is so much airspace inside the rack housing, but I have seen them overfilled to the point that the rubber gaiters were pushed off by the grease!

When I rebuild one, I grease it quite a bit during reassembly, especially in and around the area where the rack teeth meet the pinion gear, at the bushings the pinion rides in, at the inner ball joint ends and at the bushing on the RH side (that the rack rides in). Those are the primary wear points.

After that, a little topping up with 3-5 strokes from a grease gun every 12K miles or annually is about all that's needed.
