A neighbour I've known for many years that has owned a 76 TR6 since 1985 came to my door today with intentions of finally selling the car.....I went over an took a quick look at it, it's a ruset brown on tan car with 94,000 original miles. I couldn't hear it run because the battery was out but I've seen it running and sounding great last summer....The brakes work fine(some components have been recently replaced), along with the clutch....Very solid car with only a few bubbles in the typical areas, seats are 'flattened' but not ripped.....top is good(but i haven't seen it).....car is extremely dirty(looks like it's been down some gravel roads of something).....The rear end was recently rebuilt, original redline tires still on it...and with a fair amount of tread left.....paint looks pretty good(probably a respray)....second owner.
I don't have any pics yet(maybe next weekend) but I will post as soon as I can.
What do you think would be a general market value for this car?

If you are looking for some good documentation to help the owner give you a fair price, go to ebay's "advanced search" option and used the "completed auctions only" feature. This will tell you what actual recent sale prices were.

This scares the heck out of me. Be careful, be very, very careful......

I've owned probably around a dozen TR6's back when they where merely used cars, but it's been about ten years(or more) since I've had one. I can usually tell a solid car, and this one is pretty good....I know the car pretty well, because I've lived only about 1/2 a block down from the owner and I rarely saw it out...it's always been garaged....since I saw this car when I moved here 18 years ago I've always thought it was a very good car......It seams to have been neglected recently thou as the owner has bought a new BMW and lost his love for the TR....He has assured me the car is overall pretty good mechanically(and from what I heard last summer it was running pretty good)......What would you think about somewhere around the $5000 mark(remember this is Canadian dollars)???

**Forgot to add that aside from the seats being flattened the interior is very nice, original carpeting, solid floors, nice dash, and good 1/4 tonneau.

Again, what are the "bubbles" all about? The only time I have ever seen bubbles in these areas, there most certainly is rust underneath, and lots of it. That is my point. Unless the bubbles are just signs of a really poor respray. I would think that moisture in your area is an issue, not being a particularly arrid clim. Just remember that if there is rust under the paint, it tends to go a lot deeper. Mechanical work is a lot cheaper than body work.

Sounds as though you have had a lot of experience with these cars so you know to look in all the usual areas for problems.

I would think that if the car is as solid as you imply, than 4K US (5K CA) would be a bargain.

Good luck.

The bubbles are rust bubbles......but iam used to dealing with those.....Once you've lived in Canada you become fearless of a few paint bubbles.....most of them are below the chrome strip that divides the rocker....I'll just grind the entire area down, patch and repaint......this is a driver......maybe once i am done the TC I'll try my luck at a proper triumph resto.

** also forgot that the fender seams are good.....which is very rare up here

Seems like you have advanced skills in recognizing the TR6's condition. If it seems solid enough, go for it before he changes his mind or sells it to some body else. I doubt you will ever find another TR6 you know as well and it is down the street, what are you wafting for? I guess around $4k USD for a running functional TR6 sounds like a good price for the buyer.

Drive your personal car to your neighbors, take out your battery and drop it in the TR6. Last summer was last summer, fire that engine up .

Well we have agreed on a price and have a verbal agreement to purchase it!!!He is going to put the battery in and give it a wash before I come back, I'll drive it before I sign on as the new owner just to make sure everything is OK.

Thanks to all that replied for your advice, it is appreciated.
