Imagine my surprise when I see a small mouth TR3 for sale with my cars vin TS14502L. I emailed the seller and documented my cars history and he's responded saying it was a typo (could be unintentional) but he can't change it now as it is posted.
I've never sold on Ebay but can't a seller add a comment on the site at the bottom of the page in the Q/A?
He didn't say what the real vin was.
 
The seller has the choice whether to post a question and his/her answer. I'm not sure if that works when you email a question, or only when you click "Ask the seller a question" button on the listing.

I imagine you WERE surprised! Hopefully, it was a typo. I've seen all sorts of "strange" numbers on listings. A recent one was a body number - EB.... - clearly shown on the pictures. Also clearly shown was the commission tag with the proper number - TS....... I mentioned this to the seller, said I wasn't trying to make waves, and was ignored. The car was relisted several (4?) times, the listing never changed, and I'm not sure if it ever sold. Wrong number, wrong year, etc.
 
I think you should complain to E-bay before it goes any further, at the best, if it is an innocent typo, they will help him correct it. Otherwise, NOW is when you need to start protecting yourself.
 
The seller can add a new comment at any time while the auction is open. He/she can just click EDIT on that auction page while logged in to ebay.

Seller can't *change* things like VIN, transmission, title, etc. in the display, but *can* add another sentence, paragraph, etc. to the text under the display.

If you use ebay to "ask seller a question", seller has the option of posting and answering that question at the bottom of the page.

I would be very suspicious about this. I know I am sad, but I keep a note of the commission number of TR3s sold on eBay and this same seller listed the same car last October for sale. Strange he made the same typo both times. He can certainly edit his listing and add the correct commission number very easily.
 
I just checked this EBAY ad and it seems funny that the seller added something about many people asking about rust, yet hasn't said a thing about a typo on the VIN. He knows how to edit on the ebay site. Be very careful. Sunday at noon CST
 
It would appear that post, after post, after post about E BAY, that most if not all E BAY sellers and or their specs should be assumed to be lying thru their "grills"

I think this guy is legit...the only two negatives on his feedback have been from zero feedback buyers who obviously don't know how the system works...

It looks to be a pretty decent car...I just think the seller really isn't concerned with the details of the wrong TS #. After all, on this particular car being off one # on the VIN doesn't really have any effect on the car's value...you just need to make sure you get the correct title with the car.

Why don't you send a message to the high bidder and tell him wabout the TS # question...I'm sure HE will get a response from the seller...
 
Tomster you know what assume means and as a long time seller on ebay I really hate to be assumed to be a liar and a cheat. Unfortunatly there are some liars and cheaters out there but they don't all hang out on eBay!

I have bought and sold on eBay for 5 years and can count on a finger on one hand the times I have had a bad deal!

The seller indicated his mistake but really doesn't care about it and basically said "get a life" although I've saved his emails.
No response from ebay.
I can't contact the high bidder as ebay has changed the process for high dollar items and they are listed (hidden) as Bidder 1, Bidder 2 etc.
 
I like YankeeTR suggestion. In fact I would go even further and contact all the bidders and when the seller starts to see all the bid retractions, he will probably fix it. The almighty dollar speaks very loudly! He could however cancel the ad and relist as a private auction. Then no one will know the bidders user names.
 
Tinkerman, no offence intended but I am continually amazed by the amount of deception that evidently abounds on a lot of the on line sales venues.

Your more likely to hear about the bad transactions/sellers than you are to hear about the much more numerous good transactions/sellers. The old adage about people telling one or two people about a good experience (if anyone) and telling (loudly) 10-15 people about a bad experience. Makes ebay seem (unfairly) full of shysters, when its really a very small percentage of transactions.
 
He seems to have added info. to his add about the vin #.
 
It's certainly my experience that eBay really only cares about making money for themselves. They will tend to let an item run so that it will sell and they can get their cut.
