Quik Q on tie-rods

Sure it is, Cut the rubber boot off and clean up the area, grab the stem with a narrow set of vice grips or what ever and give it heck.

If you can not do that get out your cut off wheel and cut the nut, a slice across the nut and stem of the tie rod end will do it.

Or another way, get your nut cracker/braker and break the nut off with it.

That lock nut aint moving, I've got the tie rods free at the taper end, but the lock nut and the inner end of the tie rod are not budging.
I'm going to cut the entire (old) tie rods off so I can at least get the new ones on.
Man, this a brute.
 
Barry, are you referring to the jam nut between the tie rod and the outer end? Judicious use of heat and PB will normally break even the toughest of these loose.

I'm having the same problem, Barry. I need to replace the rack boots, and can't for the life of me get those lock nuts (at the tie rod end side) to budge even a small amount.

Plus a v. big hammer.
Drew, I used a second 3/4 spanner to jam in the A-arm to give some reverse torque to the tie rod flats, once that locknut is cracked, the rest is easy. What a tussle.
Job done, new ones on, wheels down and locked.
 
Ok folks, lets think about this.

A big pipe wrench on the tie rod and an appropiate wrench on the nut with a helper bar if necessary. clean up the threads with a wire wheel and use blaster overnite first then a bit of heat.
 
I guess a pipe-wrench would work, but on the BE (I don't know about on the newer "skinny" ones) there is a "flat" that a large adjustable wrench will fit on the tie rod to keep it from turning (neither 1/2" or 9/16" are the right size and a 14mm is too loose and 13mm a tad snug)!
 
Yep, tis a strange one indeed.
