Quick Windshield Mounting Question

Hopefully, tomorrow will be the day I install the windshield on the MGB. Since I didn't take all this apart, I'm not sure of the order the seals go. Do the side post seals go under the bottom rail seal, or vice versa? And how far does the bottom rail seal extend on each side?

Thanks, Adam. I'm about to install the assembly to the car, and from what I can tell, the bottom rail seal will overlap the side post seals. Looks like the flap for the bottom rail seal should fit under the side post seal. At least that's what's gonna happen here!

The only info I was able to find, was about cutting the excess off of the bottom rail seal (straight, not at an angle).

I'll be looking forward to hearing how yours goes, I have the same project coming up soon (-ish, lol)

I just did this job in the beginning of november. I honestly can't remember how I put them in. Use lots of Soapy water to help install the bottom seal. I'm sure I put the post bases on last and worked everything untill it looked good. I also used some weatherstrip adhesive around the post seals just for added insurance.
the bottom seal goes in so the lip is pointing in twards the cockpit until you get the windshield in place then it gets flipped out. it's a real pain. So is installing the seal across the bottom of the frame, so is putting new glass in the frame, so is getting to the top bolts on the side post mounting tabs (if the dash is in) gasp. all in all the whole job is a pain. Well, I'm not going to quit my day job!!!

The windshield is on the car, but not bolted down. The bottom seal I got was permanently curved the wrong way, so trying to pull it out from under the assembly, as it was all lowered into place, was loads of fun! The side pillars aren't lined up with the body for the bolts that attach them, but that can wait until tomorrow. Right now it's cabernet time!

I used a small rope under the rail seal adn once it was on the car, i pulled the rope out from under the seal and it pulled the seal out the way it needed to be! to get hte holes lined up, I used a very strong drift or a philips.....errr posidrive screwdriver and the GM tappered bolts. I don't recomend the GM tappered bolts because they are very east to get cross threaded, and cause more trouble. Do you know how to align your windshield? the wooden paint mixer trick?

Thanks, but too late for the "rope trick" - the seal is oriented correctly. However, as I said, the mounting holes on the pillars aren't lined up. I plan to do that this afternoon, so if you've got some inside info, I'd be interested. And I'm sure Jerry's in as well.

What I did, since there were two holes, I used a stong drift or a Philips screwdriver in one hole to help line it up while someone else was on the top side helping to push it down to get the first bolt started. Start on the side which is the easiest for you. Easier siad that done...

I had NO problem getting the bottom rail seal on,..I sprayed the retainer with foaming degreaser (Orange Clean), and the sucker slid right in! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I remeber when i did it. I spent about a week working on it; the L shaped brackets in the corners were rusted to the screws that held it together. I had to dril out almost every screw! Anyways after I go it all together, I got it back in the car, with the dash on. I had it for about 3 months before it got chipped. A hot peice of metal from a muffler scrapping the ground going 70 MPH flew up and chipped the windshield.....

Your experience sounds just like mine!

I'm going to try to fasten the windshield this afternoon, and thought about a similar method to what you described. I'm still curious about the paint stirrer stick trick...

Ok, to align the windshield, leave the bolts loose and pull forward on the windshield while closing both doors. Slide a wooden paint stick in between the leading edge of the vent window and the windshield's rubber seal. This should give the propper gap that the windshield needs to be at with the vent window. Now just tighten down the bolts and you are done. I have never done it that way. I've jsut always pulled the windshield as far forward as I could with the bolts loose and tightened them while pulling forward. That has always given me a good adjustment. You may need to readjust the vent windows in the doors after the windshield is in if you can't move the windshield far enough forward. Good Luck.

Thanks for the tip, Adam, but as it turned out, I didn't need it. Pulled the windshield down and forward, and the holes lined up well enough for my wife to start the bolts. (It's going to be her car, after all - she's been helping with it.) The lower one on the driver's side seems to be stripped out, but it's in place and I'll pull it and Loctite it in later. The vent wings are actually pretty close - just a minor adjustment, and this part's behind us. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hammer.gif

Now it's time to tackle the dash!
