Quick - tell me about your TR driving big miles

As an 18yo in the TR2, used to travel 1200 miles north for the annual holiday. Always rattled off 750 miles the first day, then 450 by late lunch on the second, both 4.00am starts. No country highway limits then, so 100mph on the speedo wherever possible. Those were the days.

Viv.

It's a grand day when you finally realize you can drive these cars anywhere for as many miles as your butt can stand.

My only cars are TRs, a 3 and a 4. One is my hobby and the other is my transportation. Can't recall which is which.

Bought my 63 tr4 in 1969 soon after returning from RVN. Changed out the fluids and few weeks later loaded it up with camping gear and drove it from Missoula MT to the Oregon coast about 700 miles and spent several days driving and camping. While staying with friends in Portland the water pump began to leak. I removed the pump and took it to the BL dealer (on Burnside St. maybe?). I bought a repair kit and a mechanic at the dealership overhauled it. Simple times back then. Friendly dealerships and no need to make reservations for a campsite.

Several months later I made another extended trip with a gal I picked up at a football game; mostly fueled by sex and alcohol. Nope, don't think I'll say any more about that one.

The thing is I don't think I ever thought much about having a break down. Looking back though, the car was only 6 years old when I bought it. I still make trips in the car usually not as far but I do think more about having a problem, although it has never given me any reason to be concerned.

Hopefully if it breaks, we will be near a reasonably sized town with mechanic shop, a decent motel or B&B near a bar and a restaurant. While waiting for the parts to arrive maybe overnight, we will make the best of it.

I have put over 80000 miles on this car since I,ve owned it. I did have my share of problems at first, mainly clutches but she's always brought me home on her own power, never been towed or trailered( so far) and yes they are a reliable car IMO

Purchased the '59 in March'68 with about 65000+ mi. on it's clock. Used it the next fall doing 400 mi a weekend to two jobs and back and always took home a paying ($4 per roundtrip)customer (and hopefullly female from the dorms). Super Shell was usually around $0.25 but the occasional gas war would take it down to .18 / gal. But spun a rod bearing two weeks before the end of school. Fast forward to 1972, drove from St. Louis to the Upper Peninsula, down thru Michigan to Chicago and home. 1973 was the longest trip by far, St. Louis to Wyoming. Spent 8 weeks in Lander and took one trip up to Yellowstone. That trip was on an upgraded engine though: 87mm, lightened rods and flywheel, everything balanced, and traded the 4.1 rear for a 3.7. But it has spent the last decade undergoing a very slow refurbishing.
