Are you referring to adding fluid or changing fluid?
I recently discussed this with Peter C. I'm hoping to post a detailed version in my Tech section soon. Here's the recommended procedure if you want to change the fluid: (abridged version)
Remove the shock(s) from the car.
Clean up the body of the shock to avoid contamination. Remove the screws holding the cover plate, taking care to preserve the gasket.
Remove the valve assembly, spring and any shims.
Invert and empty out the old fluid.
Fill/flush the chamber 20 wt motorcycle fork oil (or with fresh motor oil), then empty again. Do not use solvents to flush.
Refill using 20 wt fork oil (preferred). Hydraulic jack oil or straight 20 wt motor oil can be used.
Replace lid and gasket, securing with the screws. (do not move arm in the process)
Invert making the valve opening uppermost.
Add oil, slowly moving the arm through full range of motion- keep opening full. Continue until there are no longer bubbles emerging.
Replace and tighten valve assembly.
Clean shock and reinstall.
Peter says the shocks don't need "topping up" unless they are leaking. You know what the answer is if they are leaking...
