In my travels to the wrecking yard,I came across a gentleman who in our discussion told me that he has a 1957 MGA and a 1959 Triumph TR2 (?) for sale.
His description of the Triumph is that it is a basket case with a freshly rebuilt engine on the stand. All there. He has no desire to do anything with either of them, and told me to bring a "Fair Offer" He said a good number to start with was $3K
Anyone, what would be a fair offer to for a basket case Triumph TR2 or 3?
Dave....To start with...if it is a 59 it is a 3A not a 2 or 3.
If a 2 or 3 (small mouth cars) probably a little more rare & desireable. If the car is in the desert...good chance that they may be rust free. Start looking at areas of concern for rust. How complete are the cars? A complete car...rust free...with a good rebuild engine on the stand...3K would be a good deal. If history repeats its self...yes...you will have more in the car when finished than it is worth...this will not be a money making project. That being said...if you build you car...will be something to keep and enjoy. Good luck. Gil NoCal
Check the to see if a transmission is included and if it is OD....cuz that would be worth the money! Also see if you can get the Commision number off the inside cowl. They may shed some light on what he really has!
If it is close to complete and reasonably rust-free, and really is a TR2 or 3; then I'd say $3k is a great price. As in you could probably turn around and sell it for $4k on ebay.
But that's a lot of "if".
Apparently it's not too hard to get a title in CA, as long as the car is not in the DMV computer system. At least I had no trouble getting one for my 56 TR3.
Getting to keep the black plates on it was a different story
