With no other mods at all, what does an additional 50cc do the engines capability HP wise, anything?

Sorry Jack

I would tend to agree, but hey that would be a 5% increase in hp.

Patrick

Exactly, and every 5% counts.

Maybe

3 for 998 cc
10 for the right head
10 for the right cam
4 for H2 carbs
2 for a 1275 manifold
0 lightened flywheel

Hmm, from 42 stock to 72 warmed over.

90% ? and it is all bolt on.

Jack, why not just go to a 1275? Less bolts to just drop in!

But then it would not be correct.

Jack,

Explain to me why a 1275 manifold would be correct, but a 1275 engine wouldn't.

degrees of correctness?

8 degrees of separation??!! How about the H2s? They look even more different from original than the manifold does!

One must always sacrifice something for added performance!

But, they're all "period correct" modifications. When the 1098's first arrived, they were transplanted into Bugeyes with never a second thought. Then the 1275's came out, and it was the same thing. I couldn't afford a 1098 right off the bat, but I could get the HS2 setup, and install it on the 948.
Disc brakes on the front were another good example. When the '63 and later cars began showing up in the junkyards, I would guess that nearly all of them gave that up to earlier cars.
Concours is one thing, but as far as the cars were prepared at the time, I certainly have no issue at all with stuff like that.
But, I have made all the modifications that I've ever done totally reversible. That's what is so nice about these things. The cars gradually evolved in production, and virtually all of these changes are bolt ins.
Jeff

But then it would not be correct.

These cars were ment to have the wheels driven off them and then replaced. I understand the preservation of beauty and the purity of a restored car. I think that when the current condition warrants it a car should be put back original. Nowever these cars were changed as the driving conditions dictated. Super Highways and interstates changed the way they were designed. Roll up windows added weight thus the engine size was increased to compensate. Wheather modifying to race, drive daily or tool around on Sunday. Make your car just that! YOUR CAR. Then go out and show it off. I have found that it will not matter that it has been modified. There will be more people that love it than not. Just what ever you decide make it safe.

Anthony

It's all about the fun they give us. If it looks right and works right and you can put it back to the way it was for some purist down the line, then why not make improvements.
Restovate (restore & renovate) it! You are the guy who has to enjoy the thing while it is yours. What's wrong with going faster, stopping faster. handling better and being safer? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

As I watch the paint dry on the 58, I was also cleaning up the Datsun 5 speed to bolt behind the 1275.
Hey that is CORRECT for me /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif
Powdercoat and modern urethane paints are not "correct" but we use them.
The 58 will look as it should, but I still want to drive it and in 08 I have a long drive to MI.

Back when, we stole all the parts we could get, afford, steal to make our bugeyes just a bit faster. I'm speaking of the early 60's.

I have to tend to agree, If I were going to do a bugeye, I would do for me, to hati with show judges, so the 1275 would be the logical choice. Jack you're going to find most shows you go to are nothing more than a popualrity contest voted on by the people in that class. Build the car to enjoy, winning car shows is about as exciting as watching paint dry. When I take my 67 MGB GT to a car show, I do it to be around people who have these cars, often times I forget to vote or just don't bother. I bet you this Jack, you'll go do the show deal with the car as original as you can get it, get tired of the whole show crap and then build a 1275 to enjoy driving the car later.
Personally I would love to see the shows become gatherings rather than shows, it's a big farse at best. I see people who trailer MGBs in that never drive them and the first thing that pops into my mind is what a freaking waste.

And I agree Hap, most sincerely. I have not ruled out a 1275 in Miss Agathas future at all, but I have what seems to be a real nice 998 bottom end and it will need some love. In any case I must have things to do and look forward too. This restoration has been a real trip, turning the bolts like the old days, chating with folks on line with the same intrest, and just thinking about how it will be or could be.

It has been quite a year with all the new friends, something intresting to do for a change, and even being to help out a bit.

I salute all of you/us.

Bugeyes never fade away they get restored with love and care.

Our local "show" is a very casual even, no voting at all. Just a chance to show off your car (or bike). It's been my favorite for a few years now. I used to be far more concerned with originality, especially when I was searching for a car. Then I drove my tired 948 car in the mountains. So now the 1275 (and eventual 5-speed, discs, etc) is the plan.

I do like all the options that are available for our cars that are a direct bolt in, no cutting required. That's my one requirement, that everything is reversible. That way, I or a subsequent owner can go back to a completely stock car if desired. Don't think I'd ever do that, but the option is nice to have.

This old question has been asked, discussed, and thought about forever. I remember in high school, a girlfriends brother found a red sports car and put a 283 into it, found it was lighter than what he took out, could handle the power, and put a built 327 into it, It was AH 3000. Later, I had a buddy who had a TR4 I'd help work on and eventually I owned another TR4. During that time I had another buddy who acquired a TR4 with a 260 Ford motor. That was 30 yrs ago. I drove my Bugeye 15-20 yrs with a pretty strong 948 and smoothcase 4 speed. Then things started to happen. So anybody making these decisions has a lot of time and the cars are fun regardless. We are all in different places in our life and in our stewardship of our little cars, and what we do with them is reflective of both these issues. I really don't think there are many wrong answers to the age old questions.

In the immortal word of Willy the Shake, "Judge not lest ye be Judged...just run what ya brung an have fun!" or sumthin like that!! It's NICE to look over an "all original" and see how they looked back in their day, but generally a car like that has to be a trailer queen. If daily enjoyment and practicality (plus a little Xtra oomph!) are what we want, then a little leeway and modernizing updates of an otherwise wonderful machine should raise no doubts, eyebrows or questions!! One of the reasons I love LBCs is that, generally speaking, the owners lack the kind of snobbishness that is found so often among the ownership groups of some of the more "exotic" marks and in fact (and I think this is part of the success of BCF!) we eagerly swap tidbits on how to make all these little improvements with each other for the betterment of all our cars.

WOOHOO!!!! BROTHER!!!

There were so many built, they're positively common, even now. A good "driver" is worth as much as any Trailer Queen you could point to! And a great deal less desireable, IMO.

Drive th' freakin' WHEELS off'n 'em. Drag th' bits home and rebuild it to do the same thing all over again!

Long live LBC's!! We'll never see their likes again.
