Question two - leaning out the engine

Got the car running tonight and it was missing on one cylinder. Pulled the plugs and they were all quite sooty. Cleaned them gapped them and reinstalled but, I think I need to lean out the engine just a flat or two. So, standing over the carb which is on the passenger side (1500) and looking down at it, do I turn the nut clockwise or anti clockwise to lean it up?

thanks all

Assuming that your carb(s) are SU you will lean it out by turning the nut so it goes up to a thicker part of the needle. Think of it as being on a bolt and turn the nut accordingly.

thanks - and, yes, SU

Assuming it's an SU carb, you should turn it counter clockwise as you look down on the carb to make the mixture lean. This is the same as Nelson said.

I've found the Gunson Colortune is really invaluable for getting the mixture down pat. Sometimes, the flats don't exactly match up between front and rear carbs, turning both mixture nuts the same amount of flats may not yield the same air/fuel ratio. The Gunson takes the guesswork out of the mixture

thanks all - and just a single carb - syncs easily! thanks for this
