Starter died, guess after 48 years is just got tired.

Been looking but don't seem to be able to find the post that said something like here is the # of an available starter for 28 bucks from carquest? Fits Spridgets and 68 Plymouth? Anyone remember that?
 
Look for posts by Zimmy - It should be for a cricket.
 
Jack, Advanced Discount Auto Parts lists one for $45 and can have it in your local store in a day (it's from Worlwide Imports)
 
Also it seems have one for 22 bucks from autolite.

Any ideas why the difference? Seems the same to me.

In fact the cheeper one looks more correct ie not brass on gear clutch or what ever that is called.

hmm, don't have the autolite only the WW one, order in the morning delivery from Mobile sat, good deal.
 
What years did Plymouth make/import the Cricket? I tried to look up parts for one but could not find the model listing (and I looked at a bunch of years)

supposedly a Nippondenso unit carrying p/n

128000-204 or
128000-563 or
128000-756

Lester # 17155, 16878, or 17240 will fit.

These are from 94-95 honda passport
89-94 Izusu Amigo or Pickup, Rodeo 2.6L and
86-91 Izusu trooper 2.3-2.6L

This is only what I have heard.

Plan B is to call Jack at IMI.....Nippondenso pieces with conversion snouts...IMI # 1206-9A. 888-2HITORK

The Cricket was a Rootes Group (Sunbeam/Hillman)car imported
By Plymouth in the late 60s early 70s. Stands to reason it would have the same starter as all the other british cars like Triumph, MG, Sprite, and yes, sunbeam and Hillman
 
I pulled the starter, put 12 V to it and it turns, that's about all I can say for it, it turns. It is just tired. New one Sat. Oh, did I say I hate pulling starters, the lower bolt is just a pain, that is all.

Need to get my engine tuned next week. That's all there is to do and that may be good what with the other things going on.
 
I have a couple of spares that might be in working condition...
 
Thanks Chris, think I will just get a new one. Afterall I may be starting it a few times. I hope. They are rebuilt units so should be ok.
 
Did you bother to disassemble your starter? Usually the brushes and comutator need to be cleaned up a little. Brushes tend to stick and not make contact. Bushings at both ends need a little lube. These starters are very basic and dont usualy take too much to get going.
 
Looks to me the comutator needs to be turned at the very least, also brushes about gone.
 
Jack their rebuilds are A-OK and they offer a limited lifetime warranty (which I have used before on my Ford truck with no problems , just give em the old one and they get you another)! The difference in prices is in the quality, The cheaper Autolite one might just not last quite as long! The bendix gear might look more original, but who sees it?
 
Ordered the one from WW. Will be here this afternoon. 34 bucks with a warranty. Good price, good service, nice guys at Advance. For the cost not worth the agrvation of even a rebuild.
 
Jack, if you have the original starter, it may be worth it to eat the core charge and hang on to it. I don't think I've ever sunk more than 15 or 20 bucks into rebuilding my own, and I have the peace of mind of knowing it was rebuilt properly. Not just a set of brushes and a coat of paint.

Think it was not necessarly orginal, it would have need comutator turned as well.

And yes I will check inside when I pick up the new one.
 
An advantage you have in anything you may need from them is that their dist. ctr. is just outside Orlando,so you are never too far away!! And, if you have to take the starter back in a year or two it is still well worth it!! PS I have found the lower mounting bolt is easier to deal with with a universal on the ratchet extension and a box end on the nut
 
Roger on the universal. The hardest part I find is getting under the car, er getting the car high enough that I can get under it on a creeper.
