TR2/3/3A Question regarding carpet installation

I searched this forum but was unable to find an answer to this probably simple question. When installing new carpet in my '61 TR3A, are the seat tracks installed on top of the carpet, or do you make slits in the carpet to fit over the seat tracks? Secondary question - are the carpet kits from the usual sources already cut to install around the seat tracks?

It is best, in my experience,to cut round holes in the carpet to set a spacer under the runners. But
you can also just let them smash the pile as they are tightened . MG had spacers, and I like the idea
as, all is fair in "shagging". The other thing that makes this useful is the insulation pad that needs to
go under the carpet.This will not smash down and you will get very poor action when trying to adjust the seat.
The MG spacers were apx. 1/4inch and made the runners more stable.
This is the plan for my 3b which waiting for TRF to come on line again.Whats a couple of weeks after 4 years?
I will not have working turn signals until they get in new control heads either(next spring I hear).

I think the spacers are a great idea. I did not use them - and the seats catch on the edge of the carpeting when moving them all the way forward. Not a huge issue; one I don't move the seat that far forward, and two easy to prevent. But it could be better... spacers. They don't need much height, maybe 1/4"??

I would not slot the carpet for the seat tracks - I imagine it would not lay flat on the floors?
 
+1...just bolt them over the carpet. The most important thing to do when installing the seat brackets is to measure them to make sure they are absolutely parallel with each other. Otherwise you will have a seat that is impossible to adjust!
 
I put a small fender washer over the carpet and a 1/4” tall cylinder spacer on top between the washer and frame rail. Seats are still stable and slide back and forward without catching or tearing carpet. Like CJD said, put them in straight and parallel.
