Well friend, taking up knitting is become a distinct possibility. The good news is that the car finally started - but the bad? news is I am perplexed by my new oil pump. To recap, I have been concerned about my oil pump for a while - it is the only part I didn't replace when I freshened the engine when I restored the car. So, I bought and installed a new pump this spring. The pump is quite different from the original in that it has a longer pickup and an angled pickup from the original. When I asked I was told that this is a newer and better design as it is less prone to loosing pressure on turns etc. It is the only style currently available from Moss and it is a Spitfire pump (remember 1500 engine)
I lapped the pump body before I installed it and I spun the engine without the plugs to get pressure. So, the different times I start the engine, I do get pressure - 50 lbs but it takes longer for the pressure to build than the old pump. Not minutes or anything but, certainly seconds. It starts at 20 lbs and then kind of slowly spools up to 50. Is this normal? Is this just me? any thoughts?
