TR6 QUESTION ON WIRE WHEELS FOR A TR-6

GERNERAL QUESTION REGARDING WIRE WHEELS FOR A TR-6. I WAS TALKING WITH A FRIEND WHO HAS OWN SEVERAL LBC IN THE PAST AND MENTIONED THAT I WOULD LIKE TO GET WIRE WHEELS FOR THE TR-6; HE SAID THAT THEY WERE NOT WORTH THE TIME, MONEY OR EFFORT DUE TO THE FACT THAT THE TR-6 HAS A RIDGID AXEL AND THE WIRE WHEELS HAVE A LOT OF FLEX & I WOULD SPEND LOTS OF TIME AND MONEY CONSTANTLY HAVING THEM TRUED. I WAS WONDERING WHAT OTHER PEOPLES OPINIONS ARE WITH RESPECT TO THE ABOVE COMMENT? I KNOW THAT NEW WIRE WHEELS FROM DAYTON ARE PROBABLY BETTER AND STRONGER THAN THOSE THAT WERE AVAILABLE IN THE 1970'S AND THEY CERTAINLY GIVE THAT CLASSIC BRITISH ROADSTER LOOK BUT WILL THEY NEED TRUING THAT FREQUENTLY? I DON'T HOT ROD AROUND VERY MUCH AND WOULD LIKE EVENTUALLY TO ADD A FEW MORE HP OVER STOCK VIA A LIGHTENED FLYWHEEL AND A THREE CARB SET-UP AND WAS WONDERING IF WIRE WHEELS WILL HOLD UP? PLEASE LET ME KNOW YOUR OPINIONS. THANKS
 
Opinion here is wire is not as strong as stock steel wheels. But, they look way cool /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif If HP is what you are after, then go for the fly wheel and get minilites or look alikes for wheels. (I just love to spend another person's money.)
 
As far as looks, I think wire wheels improve the looks of a Triumph greatly. I've had wirewheels on several of my present and past Triumphs and MGs and never really had any trouble with them. They were the older wires and I agree with you, I do believe the newer wires (Dayton etc) are much stronger. If your really worried, get the 72 spoke model and I don't think you'll have any problems and the car will look much sportier. I say "Go for it". I love my chrome wire wheels on my TR3.
 
I've got the 72 spoke Daytons on mine purchased from hendrix wire wheel... they had better prices than TRF at the time. If you get the tires drop shipped to him he'll mount and true them as well. He's a straight up guy as far as I'm concerned. His son is one of the best paint and body men I've seen... ever.

Allen Hendrix swears that a good set of trued wire wheels will ride smoother than any steel or aluminum wheel and I'll have to agree with him on that from my experience with mine.

Here's a pic of mine... keep in mine that the car is lowered about an inch and... the wheels are a little dirty....

I also have 72 spoke Daytons on my TR250. I love them. Totally hassle free, with a finish that cleans very easily. They are certainly capable of handling any power you are likely to coax out of a Triumph engine.

The Hendrix's are the onlt way to fly if you are East of the missippi.

West would be BWW in CA.

My Hortense ('63 A-H BJ-7 has about 80k on SS laced 60 spoke Dunlops - which ARE OK now). That mileage also includes a couple hundred miles on the Ho Chin Trail, AKA Penn. Turnpike!

Unless your TR6 has been converted to a straight axle, and I have seen a few, it has independent rear suspension via semi-trailing arms. If you were interested in all out performance or handling then steel or alloy would be the way to go. But for all around motoring with a bit of fun thrown in, there is no reason to not go to wires if that is what you desire. Even if your TR6 has been converted to a straight axle, there are plenty of straight axle cars that run wirewheels.

The nice part of TR's and their wheels is that it is very easy to switch back and forth from wire to steel. TR's use bolt on adapters for wire wheels. If you use a spacer for the wire adapters then you just remove the adapters and spacers and bolt on the steels.

If you use any water in your cleaning materials extra care must be given or rust will set in the nipples. Dogs seem to be a catalyst for this action.
 
when I started looking for a TR6 I spied a red one with chrome wire wheels and the wheels really caught my eye. they do look really great. it took me 4 hours to clean all the wheels when I purchased the car but I dont have a wife and no girl friend at the moment so I have plenty of time . go for the wire wheels Now if I can just get these webers set up I will be in great shape
