TR6 Question on TR6 trunnions and inner tie rod ends

Hi All,

Haven't been on in quite a while. The Six has been running great, but I've had a persistent shimmy at @ 60-65. I replaced the ball joints, wheel bearings, and got trunnion pivot and bushing kits also. Didn't replace the whole trunnion. Ball joints were needed, as well as the trunnion kits, I still need to do the bushings for the A arms. The questions are, on the trunnions, where the upright threads into the trunnion, on one side it was snug with no play, the other wobbled abit. I took the stop off and turned the upright til it was snug like the other side. I hope that's a correct procedure. All seems in order. It has better feel and less shimmy. Next, the inner tie rod ends. They seem a bit loose. Can I replace only the innards, from Vitoria British, or replace the whole rod?

Thanks,
Perry

The manual has instructions on the trunnion fitting, but I do not believe they should be fully snug. Doing this from hazy memory so double check / wait for others to jump in here.

Inner tie rod = what the steering rack gaiter cover, yes? I don't believe they should have any noticeable play.

Perry:
I had one inner tie rod perished. I figured at 35 yrs old the other would likely fail also. Inner tie rods will set you back about $60 apiece from Moss or TRF. Moss sells a new rack for $180 and TRF sells rebuilts for $299. I bought a new Moss unit that I will install this winter. Made sense to me to get a whole new assembly for only $60 more than a pair of tie inner rods would cost me. If I had my time back I would have bought the Quick Rack but too late now so I will be installing the new rack with solid aluminum mounts and rebushing the steering column. I hope to get a good result. Good luck with yours.
Cheers,

Thanks for the replies. I will have to check on the tire balance issue. That may be a mitigating source of vibration, especially as it's only at that speed range of 63-65. I'll probably wait til spring to do anything else now, but will check on the work I have done to make sure everything is snug down.

Thanks,
Perry

Perry, double-check the alignment as well. I had a shimmy at 60 until I adjusted the tie rod ends. Now I can take my hands off the wheel @ 70mph!

Thanks for the reply. I checked all the items I replaced for tightness and the wheel bearing on the passenger side had loosened up, can't figure that out. But, tightened up and all is pretty snug. I do need to have the tires balanced probably, and an alignment wouldn't hurt either.

Thanks,
Perry
