question on choke knob

on my Midget, the choke knob if starting to feel like it's not secure behind the dashboard. it feels loose and wobbly, and it's getting difficult in getting it to lock when turning clockwise.

is this common? how is it attached to the dashboard?

any suggestions before I start taking things apart?

A large nut holds it from the back. Snug it down and all should be fine.
 
Find a MoWog to get access to the nut. You'll find you likely will need to remove the radio console to get access. A total PITA to fix. Need minature hands.

It gets even worse if your dash is wood and 1" thick with the nut counter sunk into the wood.
 
I have a Bugeye and am facing this same problem. Tach has been removed allowing easier access to that @#%$&*@ nut but I can't get a **** wrench on it to even figure out what size it is. So how do I get to this sucker? Seems like I need a shorty set of wrenches or something like that.
 
I had my dash off this winter when I was upgrading the panel lights and indicator lights to LED. That made replacing the choke cable fairly easy, as the friction stop had completely worn out on the old cable & knob. Having the seats out also makes it easier to get access under / behind the dash. Otherwise, you end up inventing new Yoga positions to try to get up under there.
 
Somehow I got it off and I have no explanation for it other than the karma and mysticism of posting on this site. The day before I literally spent 1/2 an hour trying to get the thing off and stopped just shy of throwing wrenches with my wife asking why I was cursing so much. Yesterday, after posting here, it miraculously came off with an improper wrench and improbable angling of my arms and wrists. Thanks to the Forum! Mine was 9/16", by the way, but I had some other random size on there.
 
That's the beauty and the curse of working on these cars. You can spend an entire evening trying to get one little piece to move (or tighten up) to no avail, and then the next day it pops right in (or out) without you doing anything different. Glad to see lady luck was smiling on you this time around.
