Question on Cam Timing.

What cam degree should be set for best performance on a street version 1800 engine using a stock cam? What effect will it have on idling?

Just set it using factory timing marks (unless you have a set of Indian made gears with the timing marks made 'free hand'.....)

Bill, I apologize for not making the question more clear. What I should have said was, I am building a new engine and installing a double row chain setup and the cam gear can be dialed in. How far can I advance the cam for better performance without going to far? The engine will be bench tested, but I would hate to have to pull it down to re do it again.

PS, I forgot to mention that it is a 72 1800.

Advancing the cam timing up to 5 degrees, crankshaft, would result in more low rpm torque.-- At the cost of less higher rpm torque & horsepower. There is no way to get both by changing cam timing. If in doubt, go for the stock timing.

Thanks Hap!
