Question on 1275 rebuild

On a 1275 there are no lockwashers nor locktabs on the rod bolts. Are the nuts self-locking? are they reusable?
This is just a road engine, no racing. I just need it to make it to Mo. and back this summer.

They are self locking.
I have reused them in the past with no problems.
I have also used new 3/8 x 24 nyloc nuts when I was in a pinch (hardware store stuff) and that engine was still running fine
after 11 years until I sold it and I last heard it was still OK.

That does make me rest easier. This is the first time in about 30 years that I have gotten into the bottom end of an LBC.

FWIW, if you ever replace 1275 rod bolts, vendors want a ton of money for the original set up with the nylock nuts, you can buy ARP 206-6001 (much better than stock) cheaper than new stock units.
 
New Stock units are very expensive.

I was shocked when I saw the prices.
 
So... BMC used nylock nuts from the factory on rod bolts? Geeze... when I rebuilt my car's 1275 I found nylock nuts and thought a previous owner had taken shortcuts!
 
The nylocks came stock on the 1275 at least. I'm not much of a mechanic, but even I was surprised when I disassembled my 1275 and found those on the rod bolts.
 
Shucks they use em on aircraft as well.
 
Since a lot of us will be doing engine rebuilds in the next few months I will mention that the 1275 main bearing lock tabs (from the usual sorces) that I just tried to use don't fit. They are too wide and prevent the crank from turning. Has anyone else had this happen? Am I putting them in wrong?
I am just going to use common lock-washers and hope for the best.

OOOO, will that allow for the proper torque? I'de be careful with doing that. Are you bending the tabs the proper way.
 
The crummy aftermarket locktabs will foul the crank and will need to be filed to fit. Happy-happy-joy-joy.

I always kid that someone at the Mowog/MG/AH had to be sleeping with someone at the tab washer factory /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif I never saw so many useless tab washers used by any company in my life. When it come to 1275 main fastners, they used bolts, but I would not suggest using a single fastner tab washer, think about it, what possible purpose could it serve, it's a false sense of security. You have two decent choices with the 1275 main fastner wise, get the ARP main stud kit or use good grade 8 bolts 2 3/4" long with nice small diameter thick flat washers, torque with oiled thread to factory spec 60 foot pounds. In all my years I never saw a properly torqued, oiled threads rod bolt or main bolt/stud/nut ever come loose, and lord knows my customers and I have put them to the ultimate torture test.
 
Hap is right. And if he makes a suggestion, I would go with what he says.

Don't waist your time or money,,--buy the arp bolts. They are a bit pricey, but the peace of mind alone is worth the cost.
