What is the length these springs are supose to be? How do you tell if new ones are required if they both match?

Check the Haynes manual. I know that the length specifications are in there (unloaded).

Oh, why did I not think of that, duh.

Free length is 9.4 inchs.

Mine show 9 1/2 inchs, close enough for me. Now, hope they still have the proper spring rate, I have no way to check that of course. Rates on all the springs for sprites and midgets seem the same but later models have a bit longer spring like 9.59 and 9.85 and mine are not those.

Rate should be based on material and dimensions, and should not change with time (assuming it's not rusted or plastically deformed). If they're the same free length as listed, they're probably fine.

Oh, thanks for that. Guess I need a bit more engineering background but good to know.

The things you learn here are without end.
