Took the tac and spedo apart and cleaned the face carefully with alcohol, etc.

I know where to get new rubber rings to seal the face but is there something to put on the face, wax, ???, to help preserve them?

Seem to work just super.
 
I don't think there is much you can apply safely. Had you not already done this I would have warned you to use nothing more than a little water on a cotton swab to clean the face. Sometimes the white paint comes off very easily. I'm glad your text didn't come off.

You may want to consider going to a really good hobby shop and looking at their supply of Testors model paint. Testors has a #1260 "Dull Coat" spray that is recommended for decals. It is a lacquer but if you spray it in fog coats it may be OK on gauge faces. I've used it on some of the gauges I've been working on but those have custom faces. You may want to try it on a junker gauge before applying it to the ones you've cleaned... just in case.

There is a guy from Woodbury, CT that posts on ebay a lot as britboy55. I believe his name is Chris Sorbo. May be wrong but close on the last name. He does an excelent job at restoring Smiths gauges. I have one of his restored duals. May be a good resource for answering your question.
