On March 3rd my wife and I are flying into Orlando and are staying for two weeks. Our plan is to stay in the Okeechobee area(sister lives there) and do a little vacation house hunting. We also hate renting cars and over the years have spent enough to have purchased a new car. So...we're looking for a decent car to buy and leave down there. IF we buy a place it'll stay there and can use that address for tags and so forth. If not, can put in my sisters name and use her address until we do buy. Anyhow...if anyone down there knows of a decent car...have been looking at VW Cabrios and cars about that size..would love an MG but wife packs like she's going for a four year overseas tour. Have to retired Air Force pals living in the Orlando area and are on the hunt...but would appreciate any help. Thx.

If you need to park outside look for something that won't rust and... if you buy a place look carefully for insurance. Seems like everyone is eager to get out of the liability and homeowners insurance business in this state (automobile-related isn't a problem, house/home-related is).

I also am looking at buying a beach front house in Florida (up near Jack)...problem with most of them is there's no garage because the maximize small lots with large houses. The one I'm real interested in is a 3 story with gulf views from the 2nd & 3rd floors & the 1st floor opening out to the private swimming pool....There's concrete parking for 2 cars but I can't build a carport or garage.

So, my real estate agent is looking for storage facilities nearby that'll allow a car to be parked inside. I definitely don't want an MG left outside to the weather....wind is always blowing sand all around.

One thing we have plenty of down here are "U-Store-It" type places. Many of them have bays large enough to store a car in (esp. MG-sized!)and are not outrageously priced and provide good security!

Sand/salt, rain, humidity, moist air off the ocean. I don't know what the gulf up there is like, but the salt-spray from the ocean is bad enough here that it will coat my camera lens on the airplane while it's inside the hangar 3 miles from the coast. A 10-minute ride down A1A with a sea-breeze (which is normal in the summer) will put a nice coating all over the car. A friend of mine had a cherokee she brought down when she moved from Alaska. It was really clean when she got it here but in a couple of years the side that normally faced the water was full of rust.

Oh...and if you overnight somewhere, beware about parking next to sprinklers. They don't dispense water, they're mineral distribution devices designed to destroy car paint. Learned that lesson a few times over. I travel with a car-cover now, or I park well away from any landscaping.

Yada yada yada, I'm done

Scotty is sooo correct. It'll turn steel or alloy to LACE in what seems like hours.
