Question for Nial and others...

If the weather is cooperates this weekend and I'm up to it, I was planning to power wash the underside of the car as it has years of grease/oil/dirt caked on it. I plan to use my 1300psi Karcher power washer with hot water and something called Krud Kleener that I got from STS. I also have gunk for under the engine and tranny. I read on your website Nial (I think) that you had power washed your car. Do you have any suggestions on what to do (or not do)? Thanks.

Jim

I would suggest that you are careful when cleaning around the suspension and steering assemblies. Power washers are incredibly efficient at doing just that, but keep in mind that it is easy to drive grease away from areas where it should be, such as ball joints. Just be careful out there. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Jim:

The other two guys above are exactly correct. I really like using my power washer, but you have to be careful with it near exterior paintwork, electrical stuff, the steering rack bellows, tie rod boots and other areas where it can cause damage. Be especially careful near the gas cap and brake/clutch reservoirs. If you hold it away a bit and focus on areas where there's nothing delicate, it's a great tool. Your Karcher is the same as mine (1300 psi). Since it's a lower pressure unit, it tends to cause less damage (good).
By the way, I am less carefull about the paintwork on mine....it's more of a "working racecar" and doesn't really have a great paint job anyway.
I'm not sure about the Krud stuff you mention. If you have well water, check to be sure that it's not too nasty (I use Simple Green or similar stuff) .
My neighbors get a kick out of watching me clean the *inside* of my dusty StepVan with the pressure washer. I throw a tarp over the seat and the dash and go to town on it several times a year!
