I have found four large bolts, round heads with one side flat, no other side, about 2 to 3 in long threaded on the other end, looked like they were black.

Gota be some place in rear suspension maybe.

Jack,

Sounds like drive shaft to gearbox flange bolts. The big Healey uses lock tabs on the nuts too. Good to check the Parts book or Moss illustrations to see what's required on yours.

Cheers,
John

How about the bolts that hold the rebound straps. There are four of them and they big tough stuff.

Could be. A quick check may rule out the drive shaft if they are too big to go through the flange holes. The big healey has a couple of places with larger special bolts with flats on one side... The attachment of the shock arms to the trunnion and the front and rear attachment of the leaf springs.

Bugeye has 1/4 elipiic and I know what goes there. Will try to show a pic tomorrow.

Jack, from the description, sounds like the bolts for the lower control arm pivot points.
But this is like trying to diagnose an engine noise on line!
Pix would be a big help.

Hello Jack,

are you trying to describe a 'D' head bolt, if so they fit with the flat against a shoulder.
Not so common in motor cars but usually where the head is inaccessible to get a spanner on.

Alec

Jack - What diameter and fine or course thread. How about a rod bolt? Not necessartly correct for an A series engine, but it is the only place I can think that a head like that is used. Does it have a slotted head or not?

Not a sloted head but yes a D head bolt, wonder where they came from. More details later, these are big ones. Suspension some place.

Noop. think these must be someones replacement item for something, forget where they came out but were with rear suspension. US fine thread, guess that nails it down. Just had me stumped, don't think I have ever seen any of these before. Oh well, I have lots and lots of spare bolts so no prob. Will put things back right.

Hehe, well lets put it this way they are not course threads.
