question about wheels

ebay

I have a set of these wheels, that were painted by a p.o. I
never realised how nice they should look until I saw the ebay wheels.
What would be the best way for me to get the paint off without ruining the wheels?

A good aircraft chemical stripper should do the job. Read the label to make sure it's compatible with your wheels.

Agreed. Its actually called "Aircraft Remover". I suggest using that stuff in a REALLY well ventilated area. Also wear gloves. If they are rubber gloves the stuff will eat through it. But, Aircraft Remover is hands-down the best paint stripper.

Had those on my Modded 73 Capri.
Those are nice

Maybe think about have them stripped professionally. those indents are gonna be hard to do.

Those are American Racing Vectors - I had a set (15x8s) on my 71 Camaro. They were new in 1974ish. I worked at a speed shop (Ridgerunner Speed, Albany NY) back then and we sold them.

You might need to give them a light blasting after stripping the paint. The machined areas might also be a little delicate to strip and not lose the machine marks. Maybe a good taping job over the polshed/machined parts before blasting.

Those wheels take a special oval washer, make sure they are included, or I would pass on them.

purpose of oval washer?

I don't think so. ET used an oval uni-lug washer on some cars, specifically to accomodate both ford(5x4.5) and chevy(5x4.75) cars using the same wheels, just different lugs and washers. It was great for inventory as you only needed a single stock number for two applications - actually more since Chrysler also used 5x4.5 in the era but these also used r.h. and l.h. threads on some cars.

But if you look closely at the photo, it looks like a concentric washer is all that is needed for the ebay wheels.

My Camaro that had these AR wheels also did NOT use a uni-lug washer as it was patented by ET at the time.

edit: the oval washer wheels had oval holes as well. The ebay AR wheel holes are a little hogged out looking but don't appear oval to my old eyes.

thanx PeterK, I'll have to dig my wheels out of the shed to see what they have.

btw, I'm so jealous of the shows you worked at the aerodrome
