Question about steering rack boots.

I need to replace the rack boots (gators if you prefer) on my 59 Bugeye. I did the ebay thing and I now seem to be the proud owner of a perfectly good set of boots which don’t seem to be correct for my Bugeye - I think they are for a Spitfire or something of the sort. Note to self - do some research before buying on ebay!

I've done a little checking and Moss has them for $17 each plus cost of clamps, and Victoria British has a kit (with what looks like zip ties for the clamps) for $20.

So the question is does anyone out there have an opinion on brand? How about the use of zip ties for the clamps? Maybe someone has another source for these boots. I tried the local NAPA, but their books do not seem to go back far enough to include the Bugeye, so maybe someone could tell me if the boots are the same for all early sprites and midgets?

As always… Thanks for any and all input.

Uni-Fit makes/packages a universal R&P boot kit (2 boots & 4 clamps) part number UF2022.

A COMPETENT parts store can interchange that number or procure that part. Shoud be in the neighborhood of $20.

All the racks without the collapsible column r shown as using the same boot in the Moss cat.

Vbprolly uses the Uni-fit #...zip ties work fine. BEWARE the dreaded shipping and handling charge from VB.

Thanks for the information...

The big thing I was curious about was if the boots are common to various models - I suspected this to be the case. I'll take that information, along with part number supplied, and haunt a few local part stores.

At least after buying the wrong ones I now know what the correct ones are suppose to look like! Anyone need boots for a spitfire?

Thanks again.

Those incorrect boots also fit most post '72 midgets... I think.

*splutter-groan*

You just WAIT... It'll emerge. In all it's dishevelled, raw radiant glory... Just as soon as a decade's worth of KULCH can be excavated from off'n/around it.

I really shouldn't be ragging on you Doc. I've got stuff that hasn't been seen since the Brown Shoe days.
Yes, including entire vehicles.

I'll interpret it as motivational "tough love". /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

hehee. "Contagion"!

It's been a busy couple of weeks...
I finally got around to placing an order with VB for the rack boots. It turns out they happen to be on sale - $12.95 plus shipping - if anyone is interested.
With any luck they will show up before this weekend. I would like to start getting the little car ready for the approching warmer weather - at least I can hope for warmer weather.
Thanks to all.

Quick update.
Rack boots are on!
The ones for VB seem to be of the "universal fit" variety, so there was a little trimming that need to be done. All and all I'm satisfied with the results. I did an "alignment" (some creative measuring with some sticks and measuring tapes) on the front end then a quick run around the block - things seem okay.
Thanks to all for help.
