Question About Scotch Bottles

I am having a bit of a problem with one of my bottles of single malt that I am hoping someone out there might have an answer.

I have a bottle of Glenfiddich 15 year old single malt. It seems that the cork is drying out, and allowing the precious liquid to evaporate (also known as the Angeles taking their share).

Is there something I can do to keep my spirits from spiriting away?

I think that replacing the cork is your only option. You can get these stoppers that preserve wine once the cork is removed, that you allow you to remove the air in the bottle. Alternatively a modern plastic "cork" that you can get from a winemaker's supply store will do the job, and will never dry out.

65mgb, send it to me i know exactly what to do for that problem, /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif the 15 year old bottle is about $35.00, if it was a 30 year old bottle at $200.00 then i might do something with the cork, i.m.h.o just enjoy it. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cheers.gif

Mmmm - the good stuff. My SO brought back a bottle from Scotland from me a month or so ago. I think it costs about the same price there in USD as it does here. Maybe they ship it here first and ship it back for tourists?

You could also store it lying on its side, as you would a bottle of wine. That's how I keep mine, and I don't have problems with the cork drying out.
Or, buy the cheaper ($44 here) 12 year old that has a screw on cap.

Drink it. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/jester.gif

You could put it in a decanter, that way you would see it and be tempted to have some frequently. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbsup.gif

I have a bottle of 30yr old that I am saving for a rainy day, but I may try storing it on it's side. That will keep the cork busy.

Thanks, and cheers /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

it's gotta be raining somewhere
And often enough in Florida. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/yesnod.gif

Mebbe them West Palm folks have some kinda "rain immunity"?!?!

I've the will power of a RAT, so no single malt container would EVER have that problem 'round here. I'm of NO help with this particular question. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif

I was going to suggest to Ron that I am right in the 'hood and can offer my assistance with the problem! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif

Can't say mine lasts long enough for a drying cork to be a problem... but the plastic cork seems one good solution if the fit is good and tight. Otherwise, a decanter would show it off and maybe encourage you to drink it.

Slainte Mhath...

too bad all the way to Palm Beach...be a good reason to call a BCF brain storming session...definitely fertilzer for the old grey matter!!!

I use a vacu-vin on my wine(after it's open), it seems to help, and might with this.

I would offer to host the BCF brainstorming event, but I would be embarassed to have anyone see my B' in it's current (and possible even longer term) condition.

Inverting the bottle seems to have resolved the problem. I guess I need to drink more /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

People and Scotch shouldn't be judged by their exterior. It's what's inside that counts!

I'll have to find my way over to Ron's place and help him keep from worrying over that problem ever again! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif

When Horsemits an' me were first dating, the first time I invited her to "my place" (meheh) she laid eyes on a 12' wide, 8' ceiling wall with bookshelves floor-to-ceiling--- held up with empty Walker Black Label bottles the whole way. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif

...I'm STILL tryin' to figger out just why she didn't run as far away as she could, then and there. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif
