Quaife differential and customs

This is the second time that Denis Welch has tried to send my (by UPS) Quaife differential and the goverment security has returned it to them! I'm po'd and I'm sure DWM is too. Anyone else have a similar problem? I'm curious if anyone in the US might have one? UPS wouldn't or didn't know why, so just trying over and over again seems dumb.
John

ps: 60 Healey 3000

Try British Car Specialists in Stockton, CA. They carry DWM stuff.
Hi John,
I'm going to wait and see what Denis Welch wants to do, since I already paid for the unit. I think it's kinda strange why it failed goverment security. I have several emails out to see if anyone in the US actually has the diff in stock. Quaife in the UK doesn't and even if they did I'm not sure it would pass the security check either. I'm interested in what they are finding wrong with the part that they won't let it ship. It's weird that you can turn down a shipment and not explain why. I should note that I've ordered a bunch of stuff from Denis Welch, AH Spares, and others with no problem.

I bought this unit 2 years ago from DW for a second diff I set-up for longer tracks with no issues. I wonder what's changed, maybe it's how their classifying it. As for a US supplier, Boy Racer and I searched in vein for over a year with 0 results.

Sorry to hear about your delema and hope it is resolved soon. But I have a stupid question. What is a "quaife" differential? And is this something new from DWM? Thanks, Dave.

Dave,
Limited slip differential manufactured by Quaife. They have asked the UPS representative for an explanation as to why it is being denied for security reasons. Once I hear back from DWM I'll pass on the information.

You could give Dave Bean a call, they used to (and may still) carry some Healey stuff. Their website was written sometime in 2001 it seems, so it is fairly useless. https://www.davebean.com/

Thanks Greg. Since I've already paid for the one at Denis Welch I'm going to see whether they can solve the problem. The interesting thing is originally I tried Quiafe direct and they didn't have any in stock and suggested a place in the UK, but since I've bought a lot of stuff from Denis Welch I went with them. It's not their fault, but something in the UK security system triggering the problem. Doesn't seem to be a hot commodity. Weird.

So here is the newest info. The UPS representative said the differential was covered with grease and that was why it would go through security. Really, they always have before. Anyway cleaned off the grease and it's on it's way again. Hopefully further.
John

Well it appears it has departed the UK (woo, woo). I guess the excess grease was what they didn't like.
John

Nice! Will you be receiving a separate package of grease too?:jester:

Exactly. After I told my wife what the hang up was she said that was a concern with security since they were told that it could be used to cover up a bomb!

Hmmm? I just brought in an entire Super 7 two weeks ago. US Customs and Homeland Security was pretty simple. I'm sure there was grease, oil and gas in it.

I did bring a car from Canada a few years ago and they warned me to be sure if was fully washed.....to keep out Canadian agricultural pests
(wonder how they regulate the wind between US/Canada?) :wink-new:

I'm only delivering the facts. Maybe you could tell the Denis Welch group since they paid 3 times to get it sent to me.

I think the import export bit is kinda like the NFL Referees -----:highly_amused:
