Q about Monza mufflers and install

I'm intrigued by the Pacesetter Monza exhaust, after making the mistake of asking you all about something else I could buy for my MG. More questions, though, for those who know:

Does it sound throaty, sporty, and yet not too obnoxious? Would 4 hours on a highway with it make me regret having it on the car?

Does it negatively affect ground clearance? I bottom out over the occasionally mishapen pebble as it is, so this could be an issue.

And finally: will not knowing how to weld (though what's stopping me is not having the tool) cause me to seek out someone to put the muffler on for me?

Sorry if these questions are bordering on too esoteric for a whole thread to be dedicated to them.

Just so you know all your options, have you looked into a Peco system? Deep, throaty sound without being too loud. I've tried a few systems and it's my favorite overall. Haven't personally used a Monza though, they seem like they make more noise than HP. But the last time I seriously checked them out was years ago.

Years past I always went with Stebro, but since they've disappeared it's Ansa systems for my cars. Nice noises, good construction.

I like the dual tips of the Monza, and the Peco systems that I've seen online all look very similar to the muffler system I have now.

Ansa I haven't seen much of, because I can't find information on which to put on an MG.

Purchased a new Stock exhaust system from VB a few years ago and it had a pretty nice sound. But because I’d lowered my B the center resonator (muffler) would drag as I traversed speed bumps so I removed it (I believe Steve recommended this – Thanks Steve). Anyway now the sound is great! Throaty & aggressive, but not annoyingly loud at highway speeds.

From the header back, I always just have my local muffler shop build mine...aluminized pipe running into an 18" 'cherry bomb' in the center & a 12" or 14" 'bomb' in the rear - depending on sound...then a stainless tip sticking out from under the bumper....as cheap as if not more so & great sound & lasts forever!

Hmmmm, that's another option, and probably relatively easy to try, provided I don't mess anything up. I'll investigate it..

I have the Monza on mine. I took my first ride yesterday and was on the highway for about 10 minutes. Very throaty. My first thought was that an hour straight of this (for the mrs anyway) would get to ya. I don't know until I get out for that hour.
Great sound as your moving up through the gears.

Ear plugs for trips or some of those nice noise canceling earphones????

Hey vping, the sound in that video (the It's Alive! post) is your car with a Monza, then. I remember thinking it sounded very nice and rich.

You left your lights on, though!

Monzas are crap and don't fit worth a ****. Buy an ANSA exhaust from Brit-tek. He may still stock them.

You will have to cut your rear valence to fit the fake dual tip thing. That or run it a couple inches too low. A single pipe actually works better on these cars.

Yes that is the sound in the video and yes I left my lights on. ;-0

I will have to admit that I only just started to dry her and the tips do drag as my valance is not cut. I raised in another inch by adjusting the bracket.

It came with the car so I cannot be blamed for the install.

Hmmmm you're right, Steve; those tips aren't real, so what's the point of having two of them? I'll look a bit harder for an ANSA, and see what they're like. I'm also not too keen on cutting into my valance. Sounds sadistic.

Would you mind posting a recording of what your cars sound like? I'd like to get a better sound and more durable system without going broke to buy a premium system that might end up driving me crazy on a long ride. Does the middle muffler have a bad effect on ground clearance or anything like that? My car doesn't have a middle muffler.

Is your muffler shop a true local shop or part of a chain? One of the chain ones around here does a pretty good job on unique cars, and they did the downpipe on my car when it rusted apart. I'm wondering if they'd be up for a job like this in the near future when the rest of the system starts to go.

Personal preference - but I've always liked the single tail pipe & feel it looks just fine for our Bs. Simple & clean. Only thing I added was a chrome tip.

I made up an exhaust system using SS Magnaflow mufflers. 3 ½” diameter round. 2” in/ out. They have long strand SS wool inside so they won’t blow out like glass packs will. Here is a video of what they sound like. Please, no comments on how bad the body looks, I know. I needed to get the engine running so I could work on the panels outside my tiny garage. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif you tube Just one more thing to consider.

No shame, Greg! My Elan is currently BURIED under a pile of MGB swarf, patiently awaiting the day I get the B finished and can begin the REAL resto... at least you can START yours.

that sounded pretty good.... until you got into the garage. It sounded like there was some sort of wierd harmonics going on between the acoustics of the garage mixed with the exhaust + the distance to the camera that made it sound almost like one of those WRX STis with a burp cannon. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

no offense. it's just the way it sounded to me once ya got into the garage. Outside it sounded _nice_ though /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I had the Monza system on my old GT. I liked the sound and the looks as well, but it never fit right until I had a muffler shop basically rebuild it and tuck it all up against the floor. It kept getting bashed up when I drove it.

I would not recommend it, ANSA is probably the way to go or the muffler shop custom deal. Or Pico of course.
