What are Push Notifications?

My take: Push Notifications means you get a message on your screen from a person or website you've been to before. Usually (not always) an "ad" to get you to do something more online, even tho' you're no longer on the sender's website. Unfortunately, many websites default to sending your push notifications automatically, and you have to take action to stop them. (You can set your browser to filter or block them.)

I see young folks staring at their cell screens almost continuously these days - swiping through their dozens of daily "push notifications", a few of which might actually be useful!

Thanks Tom, I don't need them! :rolleyes2:

Tom is not quite right, at least not in the context of BCF Push Notifications. Our Push notifications have nothing to do with advertising. When you enable Push notifications (on a supported device), you will get popup notifications for things like when someone replies to a thread you're following, or someone starts a new "Conversation, etc." It's a relatively new feature with this forum software and too be honest I haven't completely figured it out myself. But is has NOTHING to do with pushing advertising. You can enable or disable Push Notifications from within your Preferences (if your device is supported).

Yes; push notifications have both good and bad uses, but they notify you of something when you are not "in the app". For example, a weather app "pushing" a notification of imminent bad weather, or BCF letting you know there has been a new post, even though neither are currently being used. Or Home Depot announcing a sale on grills as the summer ends.

On my phone I can usually select the apps that I want to receive notifications from. For example I allow my calendar app to send me push notifications - alerting me that I'm supposed to be doing something. Similar with "find my phone" - I want that to send a notification when needed  . But I've turned Home Depot off.
