Pros/cons on e-bay item

A friend of mine sent me that auction link earlier. He thought I should buy it for the Mini. When I asked him why he didn't buy it (he has a Mk2 Sprite) he said that the blower would interfere with the steering on a LHD car. This is all hearsay from me (through my friend) as I have never seen the Metro turbo unit up close.
 
Isn't that the unit that GlennB has on his Bugeye (along with the Megasquirt)?

These are from the later A Plus engines like Metro and maybe Maestro ect..
I have heard of people adapting them to older engines, but don't know anything about what it would entail.
 
Nope, Glenn's is a home brew system based on a ray-jay unit.

There was a car at the Ozarks with this metro turbo setup. I think his name was Daniels?
 
The guy you probably saw in the Ozarks with this set up is Jim Danielson, I don't know the details, but remember him telling me the install was far more complicated than a simple bolt on.
 
IIRC they are IHI units and are suppposed to be crap. They are tiny though. Garrett and Ray-Jay are top notch. I had a RJ off of a bike that I stupidly traded for some junk that I couldn't use. It could have been used draw or blow through. Right size too. Best you can hope for out the junk yard is a Garrett T3 off of a Volvo or Saab w/ .42 AR on the exhast side and maybe but a .60AR on the comp side from a ZX. I've got a bunch of that stuff here, but that'll still be too big for one of these little motors. Best thing if you're serious is spend the $$$ for a NEW proper size turbo and all the fixin's and build your own set up. It won't be cheap. $1200-1500 from my outdated prices of a few years ago. Either way it's a pain in the butt.

Allot of people use IHI's, but from what I read in "turbo land" ,they're supposed to be crap. This one can only be used as a blow through.

As usual, I looked before I leapt. I thought this was another Metro Turbo ad I saw on ebay but it's not. It looks like it might be a Garret but I'm not sure. I'd chance it for $400 for the whole set up. It should be fun, but milage may be terrible. Still some stuff to lay out, but the hard part is done IMO.

Wait a second !!!! When I saw "Metro", I was thinking Chevy Metro as those came turbo charged as well (or was it Spectrum?). I knew nothing about the MG Metro turbo. Yes, it is a Garrett (from what I've read elsewhere on the MG Metro).

If I had a 1275, I'd do it. Hood cut is a deal breaker in a BE, but a Spridget is another story. IMO, it's not a bad deal for $450 shipped if it's in the shape he claims. If you post a link for one that'll fit a 1500, I'm in BIG trouble !!!

Because a turbo 1500 will blow the crankshaft out of the bottom of our oil pans...? :jester:
 
Whoops. sorry. I'm a little late to the game. If the Topic Heading had mentioned a turbo I would've jumped right in. Unfortunately I've been busy with my own turbo MG Midget project and now the bidding has closed on this turbo.

If anyone has any questions about the MG Metro Turbo setup and the way it fits in a LHD Square nose, I would be happy to share my experience. It is a direct bolt on to an A-Series motor, but not in the car. You'll either have to U-joint the steer or make some adaptation to the manifold/turbo placement. I've seen examples of it both ways. Just search the interwebs for "MG Midget Turbo" and you'll find all sorts of results.

These can still be found fairly regularly on eBay.uk though you'll have to pay a fair amount of shipping. Then again, any Metro Turbo you see here had to be shipped over at some point.

1500 can't be that weak, huh? Hap?

At least the turbo is on the "right" side.
