Propshaft spins but wheels don't

Been a while but I almost got this back together. Timeout for a surgery and the holidays.
I decided to go ahead and pull the entire axle assembly to clean it up and paint it and to replace the springs while I was at it. I call it the "while we're at its". If you've ever remodeled a kitchen you know what I'm talking about.

Some pix here: https://photobucket.com/spriteAxle

When I took the springs out and unbolted the front mounting bracket from both springs the brackets got wider and wider as I turned the bolt out.
I had to cut the bolts out as the captive bolt was getting stripped.
I tapped the bolt out and can turn a new bolt in. But, I am wondering a couple of things
1) What is it that causes the bracket to be under such stress that it behaves that way as you turn the bolt out? I have BFH'd them back square. which brings me to question 2) Should I replace these brackets? Each side was bent about 1/4 from square with the rest of the bracket. I just wonder if they are still safe?

I've done some googling but see no dicussion out there around this.

Corrosion between the bolt and the inner distance piece thru the spring eye. I've run into the same thing. Whether they are safe would be a personal call from the guy that is looking at them!! If the captive nut is stripped I would at least use a longer bolt with a lock nut on the outside.

Kurt.

Axle anxiety! Been there.
