TR2/3/3A Propeller Shaft Spline Wear

Hi,

I am tracking down a possible drive shaft vibration in my TR-3a. I have the drive shaft out. I am measuring .012"circumferential movement in the spline joint. The shop book calls for a max of .004". Is this correct? What's typical?

Thanks, RG

I cut thin strips of ss shim stock & put a strip in each spline when assembling . Don't remember which car , but it worked fine to eliminate slop.

I haven't tried to measure it, but the original fit was definitely very snug. IMO .012" is way too much.

Best route IMO is to find a local driveline service shop and take it to them. They can straighten and balance it for you, plus give you the best way to repair the splines. Most likely they will say to just replace them, possibly build an entire new driveshaft if it has other problems. Building a new one from modern parts is no big deal, IF you have the right equipment.

One example I found on Google in the Baltimore area: https://a1driveshaft.com/index.html

Hi Randall,

Thanks for confirming the wear. I am familiar with A1 Drive Shafts. Short term, I am going reinstall the drive shaft and use it. Long term, I want to go to a 5 speed or overdrive transmission. I can work the drive shaft issue then.
Thanks,

RG
