Prop Shaft Balancing

Who does this? A machine shop, transmission place, wheels and tire place, etc?

I figure I'm gonna need to pull mine with all the racket its making, but I don't know who does the balancing.

There are places that specialize in this. We have one that has a little ad every Sunday in the classifieds. I expect most of the places you mention would know the name of a place to take it.

Pete,

Took mine from my TR6 to a transmission shop. Just call before you drop it off to make sure that they offer the service. If they don't they will recommend a shop to use. If I recall correctly, it cost me about 60 bucks.

Cheers,
M. Pied Lourd

I took my TR6 shaft to get balanced about two weeks ago. The company that did it specializes in springs, and drive shafts.

Mine charged $10 labor each to replace the u-joints; with balancing, the entire bill was around $100.

Pete!
These guys have been helpful in the past.

Hey Pete,..If it's for your Spitfire, You may be dealing with a problematic CV Joint at the front. I don't know if they are repairable, or even replaceable.
Seems like retrofitting an earlier drive shaft may be an option.
Take care Bob

Oh... now that would just plain suck :frown:

If I have to go through all the work of retrofitting or putting some other cars parts in then I might as well sell/trade the car. I'm not into the whole Frankensteining thing. On the bright side, my insurance (State Farm) values my car at $16,800 (I have only 22k miles on the car).

Doc, I'll give those folks in Orlando a call and see what they quote compared to the places a bit more local. If they seem like the way to go, then it gives me an excuse to go visit my Brother there.

And then ride all th' way over here for that promised beer!

Pete
Did you get the chance to confirm your drive line type?
I found this IPB on Canelys.
https://www.canleyclassics.com/?xhtml=xht...xsl=diagram.xsl
And they have this to say about the strap ones.
Check for any broken straps and that there is no wear in the pin which fits into the prop end - a worn pin means the prop is scrap as it will not balance on the car even though it may balance on the machine. If all is OK, change UJs and rebalance.

I did not find this out until after I had replaced u-joints and had it balanced. I have not had time to take the straps off to see if the pin is worn. The IPB does a good job of showing the "pin".

So I was interested if you ended up having a strapped propshaft and what you find out.

Thanks

Pete,
That seems high. I had a new special made shaft for my 5 speed tranny made, with U joints, Toyota coupler at the front TR3 at the rear balanced to 100 mph for $200.

VB sells a replacement shaft with u-joints for the late model Spits.
