I took a lap around the cove. Started right up, clutch and gearbox is just fine.

Carbs suck.

Sure wish I knew what was wrong with them.

Does anyone know on H1's how many flats should be open. 12 is just too darn many.

Whoo hooo. Got tired of waiting, so made a choke. Me and Patton we both have our own schedules and by golly it was time. Timeing seems preaty good, need a new bolt for the tightner on the dizzy I see, no prob there I think.

It's the darn carbs fuel just runs out the bottom.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great News Jack

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am changing my signature until they get worked out.

That's a nice looking project you have there Jack. I assume you are going for as original as possible? Otherwise I would recommend a Webber carb conversion. No leaking gas, set it once and forget it. I made that change years ago and have been very happy since...but then my BE is not even close to original.

Jack - are you sure you don't have a sticking float?

No clue Tony, that's my next step for sure.

Does any one remember, Floats float, seats new, but I have the ball in the needle down and the pointee end up, is that correct??

NOOOOOO!!! Pointy end DOWN!!!! The carbs should work MUCH betterer with that switched!! Ball end at the ledge/flat on the float lever, then get the 7/16ths dowel and make the adjustment to get the right float level. By flipping the neddle, you should change where the float sits considerably, since the "cone" end will seat in deeper than the ball end! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/whistle.gif

NOW take a spin around the cove Jack!!! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

Pointed end goes into the seat and the other end hooks onto the float arm. Would be hard to do backwards I think.

Has a pointee end and a ball end, now I get conflicting answers.

I pointee end up into the seat?? and ball end rests on the float arm??

I think the other way makes em leak out the overflow.

Floats are brass and float nicely nothing in them.

You are right Jack, it goes into the lid. When you invert the lid, to put it in, it goes pointy end first (or downward)
The ball or plunger end allows the float (while inverted, with the weight of the float on the ball) to be adjusted by bending the tongue to conform to the proper (7/16") for H1 & 2 & 1/8" for HS2. As the bowl overfills, it compresses the ball spring to apply pressure to the cone against the seat.

I have scanned in the ancient "Tuning SU Carburetters" manual dated mid 1960s, now unobtainable, OCRed it, and set the pictures in a reasonable location relative to the text. There are also complete needle tables which are not yet in there - I haven't cleaned those up yet.

It is 1.4 megabytes so I can't post it here, but I'll email it to anyone who wants it. Please send me email offline if you want it.

She's alive!

Congratulations, Jack. That's got to feel good.

that is correct jack

And I even have a copy Chris, maybe I need to read it some more.

Going to check the needles in the dash pots one more time.

Now that I have time to reflect, the clutch worked just great. The transmission was a non issue, did not even think about it, only used 1, 2 and reverse though. Tac works, oil pressure and temp work, fuel gage works, lights work.

Of course the front end is not aligned nor do the carbs work the way they should. Need a new bolt on the dizzy lock bracket, no bigee.

Got to get a longer sleeve for the throttle cable, need a 26 inch one, will visit the bike shop. Orentials make everything a bit short you know.

Starts well just hard to keep running, never got it all the way up to temp, only about 130. Can not understand what I am doing wrong, smells like stink, unburned fuel, way to rich, have the flats at 9 at the moment. 12 is just way to much and caused part if not all of the leaking problem on the H1s. Chokes work well, return nicely, needles plop to the bottom easly. No backfires through the carbs.?????

Spoke with Joe in NY even, he mostly did not have a clue at this point.

Jack, I keep thinking in the back of my mind that you should start with 8 1/2 flats with that older carb and then go up and down from there...I may be wrong though! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/confused.gif

Great news Jack!!!!!!!!!!!!
I seem to remember running my H1's at about 5 1/2 flats, Jack, but it was eons ago. I'd just keep cranking them up until things settle down.

6 is the number here!

Jack, most SU needles are designed to run with the jet about .050" down, I never count flats, I just measure jet heights with a dial caliper, but I bet Jeff's 5 1/2 flats is probably pretty darn close to .050" down. If you're too rich, the car will normally run fine to a certain rpm range then start to miss or blubber, , keep leaning it up and you see it take more rpms before the miss takes over, and eventually with jet adjustments you should work it out.

Have tried flats 5 thru 8 Hap. and it runs as long as I keep playing with the choke but dies quickly and will not even stabilize with choke out a bit. Must admit I have not gotten it up to operating temp yet, can't keep it running that long, hehe.

Will check the jet for .050 down of course but bet that is about what it is. At least it seems the leaks have gone away and that is a big step forward.

Note to self. Take car to Haps for carb adjustment, LOL.

Thanks Hap, your comments and wisdom always appreciated.
