well, it's time for pics - Before and After. The windshield is in place but not quite levered down - I've decided to let it rest for to night - but, any ideas for that last 1/2 inch?

Tap gently on each post with a rubber hammer? Silicone spray on the post and sockets? Never had to do this.
 
Is the rubber keeping it from seating down?

Lashing strap ALL the way around the car (use towels to protect the paint.

how does it cover the window? at the top rail? on the two side extensions?
 
Just the "ears" at the bottom.
 
A trick for getting shims in place. Cut a slot in the side so that once bolts are started but not tightened down, shims can be slid in from behind. Make windhiekd reinstall a one person project other than the heavy friend needed to help sit on the frame to get it bolted and seal compressed.
 
progress - one side done, the other side - broke two straps tightening and decided to spend family day with my daughter instead. will get a proper ratcheting strap in the next day or so. BTW this would have been easier before te dash went in.

I used a cheapy strap (with ratchet) from autozone and it didn't even seem remotely strained.
 
don't ask - it's a holiday here - everything closed - all I had was some cheap straps and the twist to tighten method. Worked for one side only.

Ok I am clearly doing something wrong. just spent an hour and could not get the windshield close enough to get the bolt in on the drivers side. Was within probably 1/16 of an inch but the strap would not tighten any more at all. (actually broke one ratchet)

Finally took off the windshield completely to confirm that the threads still worked for the upper bolt. It does.

To recap - put the windshield in place - put the centre bolts in (under mirror) to locate. Put the bolts on the passenger side and now couldn't get the drivers side on - right now it is completely removed and time to walk away for awhile before something gets broken - which it will.

Anyone want to talk me through this?

Is your old seal in good enough shape to re-use?
Just guessing the new seal is the problem here?
 
John-Peter....a suggestion.....loosen the passenger side until the end of the stud is just flush with the face of the nut....then try the other side. This may give enough play to get the driver side nut started. Then, if it were me, tighen each side in equal amounts until the frame is seated. Just my 2 cents....good luck and let us know.
 
well, the seal was for sure part of the problem. took a bit of time before my car club tonight and tried again. ended up being a two strap job. put the first over the ears on the top. tightened it - then ran a long thinner bolt through the bottom hole and put a strap on it also for the last 3/8 in. or so - got the first screw to bite and then went off to the pub. Got back, same thing other side - two straps - and we're good to go. Truly a PITA job and I'm glad it's over.
