Out, split, clutch and fly wheel off. Not a lot to see but oil on the back plate so far.
 
Okies, found the leek, you can see under the oil pump cover when you shine a light in behind. Maybe two inchs of the cover is not sealed. No way to take a pic with my equipement, sorry.

Not sure quite yet how I will repair but beleive me it will be perment for sure.

Enough for today, time to help wife put the tree up.

Oh, looked at the scroll seal as well. Dry as a bone from the looks of it.

Now I need a darn gasket for the rear plate to engine. Oh well, maybe I will just put it up with RTV. Have done that in the past.

No oil at all on the engine or the engine side of the backing plate.

The oil pump cover in my previous sprite was brazed in. That holds em for sure.

If I just had another backing plate handy I would have Miss Agatha on the road tomorrow. Oh well, it is a hobby, right.
 
If you have the equipment I woud either braze it or TIG it.
Lay it on its back fill the cup with some liquid something with low spec. gravity alchol? and check for leaks.When I pulled mine apart when putting in the rivergate trans kit the inside was marred by the pump bolt flange on the upper left side.I'm sure if I had not removed a much matrial as I had it would have cracked the solder joint or deformed the plate enough to leak.I ground the flange down as much as I dared with a dremel grind man the alum.was soft!

Found a friend with a 948 backing plate and the pump cover brazed on. Heh, I knew he had it and only had a 1275.

Will be in the post today. So, maybe by the weekend Miss Agatha will be good to go.
 
According to UPS, cockpit suround thursday and backplate with brazed oil pump can friday.

Meanwhile on with the Christmas shopping and decorations.

Is that back plate coming from Jim? I seem to remember him having all sorts of trouble until we realized he had the wrong backplate. But.... it seems the the cover was brazed on the wrong side... or something weird like that.
 
Is the oil pump sealed properly against the block? There should be a gasket that seals the intake and output to/from the pump and also seals around the camshaft so any oil from the oil pump shaft and the cam bearing goes back to the engine from the inside of the bearing. It sounds like either the gasket is not sealing properly or there is a problem between the oil pump body and the oil pump cover. You had trouble with the oil pump fitting. Maybe some more fitting is required. Pictures please. The drive of the oil pump is not bottoming out in the camshaft??? The cover in the engine plate should be a secondary seal or is there a drain back hole below the pump at the bottom of the can?
 
Naa, think we not even close.

Tomorrow I will get things all cleaned up ready to put it back together and install engine. Now I can't wait. Miss Agatha is about due for a real ride.
 
Measured my scroll seal lips. between .001 and .002 the .002 will not really fit in there.
 
Ok, think I got it. Here is what happened, the bolts holding the pump on were a bit too long and bottomed in the holes. The pump was snug but not tight as the bolts would not go any further.

When I pulled the pump I noted that the bottom 1/8th inch of the bolts were striped clean where the hole had not been threaded to the bottom. Also noted oil leakeage through the pump bolt holes and the pump was not really solid in the cavity, it basicly fell out.

It has been remounted with a bit of RTV and it is tight now for sure for sure.

Think I cracked the oil pump cover sodder joint when I tightened the backing plate without proper clearance. Then I did a bit of grinding on the pump, out side of the bolt holes and it fit, by then it was too late the crack was in being.

Have a new backplate comming today on which the oil pump plate was brazed, that should hold it.

I feel that the problem is now solved and is only awaiting reasembly of the engine and reinstalling same to prove it.

Thanks for the assistance as always. Maybe this will keep someone else from haveing this problem.
 
Backing plate arrived. Striped and cleaned up. Painted the right color and hanging in garage to dry.

Guess I am ready to put it all back together and test starting in the morning.

Enough for tonite/today she is hanging in the sling ready to go in. Really need better light to do that job.

Had a thought or two. With the pump leak fixed oil pressure should go up and it was ok as it was. 20 at idle and 45 at 3500.

With the brazed can I only have .012 between the can and the flywheel rather than the 1/8 that is normal, as long as it does not rub all should be fine though.

Why do the neighbours dogs all come to see me when I am working in the garage at nite? Strange that.

70 degrees out their at the present. Next 5 days are supose to be in low 70s. Good weather for testing and tuneing.
 
Is that .012 when pushing the crankshaft to it's most forward position? Like when your foot is pressing on the clutch pedal. If so, you should be ok.
