Hmmmm? Well as much as I kind of like the sound of that, perhaps I’m getting a little ahead of myself here. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif

But actually I'm going to be a “guest” (at my own insistence) instructor in my son’s auto shop this week when I’ll be turning my son & three of his fellow students loose on my Porsche 928 to swap out the old leaky radiator. (Gulp! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/confused.gif )

Anyway this is all part of his auto shop grade and working with his teacher I've arranged for him and three of his fellow students from his class to exchange the new Aluminum Radiator. Now normally I wouldn’t be too concerned if I was doing this in my own garage, as I think I have enough resources (abilities, tools etc) to get myself out of trouble. But because they’re doing this in my son’s auto shop I’m planning ahead and bringing my own tools.

Like I said I'll be on hand (hands in my pockets) strictly to advise & help out should there be any unforeseen complications. I also have a loooong list of dos & don'ts (mostly don'ts /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif ) for the boys before work starts on my car.

So here is what I've got got on tap for the boys:
New C&R alloy Radiator.
New Upper & Lower Radiator Hoses.
New Crush Ring Blocks 2ea.
New Thermostat & O-Ring.

I’m also going to make print outs for the students from the cooling system section of the 928 shop manual (CD) dealing with R&Ring the radiator

Well wish me luck! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cheers.gif

Bret:

Check on thermometer thingy first. If recollection serves me right, on another lessor water cooled German engineered ferry vehicle, it also has an oil passage there as well. Yours is probably different.

Well you’d be correct Patrick. I’ve already got a replacement thermostat on the radiator. And yes there are actually two coolers built into the radiator on the left & right sides on the 928. The one on the drivers side is the engine cooler and the one on the left is the transmission cooler on Automatics. While my new radiator has’em both I’ll only be using the engine cooler because I’ve got the 5-speed manual.

;)Great and try to keep them hands in the pockets.

Bravo,
Patrick

Don't know about that but for some reason the word "foolish" keeps coming to mind.

That is a no-brainer doc. Honestly, I’m so nervous that I hardly sleep a wink last night and must’ve read & re-read the related section of the manual myself about 6 or 7 times last night. In fact I’ll probably read it again while I’m making some copies for the students.

Got it covered Doc, Pardon the pun /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif , I’ve got some finder covers that I use all the time! Going to go over how to be careful with the paint by removing belt buckles and any loose items that might snag or scratch.

LOL! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif Funny but I never got myself a campaign cover (never a DI) I was an air winger so I’ll have on my 2nd MAW ball cap that I always wear when I’m wrenching. But I know my son has given his classmates the “411” on me. So I guess they wouldn’t be surprised if I did show up wearing a Duty Belt, Smoky the Bear Hat & a Swagger Stick.

*SNORK*

Warn 'em about wrist-watches and rings too.

Good luck and report back. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

I'm getting ready as I type. Everything is loaded up in the Shark and I'm doing some last minute things before I head out.

I'll give a full accouting & should have some photos too.

Dang-it! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/mad.gif

Well the bad news is they had some slacker taking up space in one of the stalls in the auto shop so everything's on hold til tomorrow afternoon. Talking to the teacher he was pretty upset that the student didn't finish what he was doing or at least pull his pile of crap out of the lift stall.

I'll update everyone tomorrow evening.

Bret, just know that the kids are excited but just as worried as you are. I'm about to polish, wax, & detail a 944 at work, and I'm terrified.

Well we got the radiator in but that's as far as I dare press the kids. As it was I encountered a number of other problems with the thermostat that necessitated some engine surgery.

See my “small project turned into a larger project” thread in the BCF’s *other cars* forum.
