I have three computers here at home: my desktop running XP, a laptop running XP, and my wife's desktop running Vista. I can see the other two computers from my desktop, and the two other computers can see each other. But neither of the other computers can see any of the shared files on my desktop. I had it running well for years, but since my desktop was rebuilt, something is set wrong, and for the life of me I can't figure out what I have done wrong. They all show the same network name, but something else must be wrong. My laptop can find my desktop, but can not see the various drives to map them.

HELP.

Quick thought before I head out for the evening.

Have you enabled "file sharing" on the appropriate folders each of those computers?

Edit: or at least enabled file sharing on your own desktop folder?

Just because those computers can see another system's HD doesn't mean they can see what's contained in them.

Anyway, just a thought.

File sharing is turned on for the hard drive, and for the sub folders too. It is an external harddrive on my desktop that I am mainly trying to share across the network as it holds most of my photography. I do not share the backup hard drive.

What brand of software firewall are you using? Is it set to include the IP Address of the computer that is not being seen?

And as Tom says, all three must have file sharing enabled, or the one that does not will be invisible.

Oh, you also must have at least one folder set as shared. If no folder is shared, there is nothing to see, even if the file sharing is enabled.

I have Norton 360 Firewall turned on. If I turn it off the Vista PC can see the computer and access the files. Is there a setting I can make in 360 to allow just the network computers to see the files with the Firewall on? I do not really understand setting up a firewall.

Just one firewall at a time or your connections will slow to a crawl.

You think you have problems? I'm trying to get a DAC to function on a wireless USB hub. I'm about to rip my brain out and put it in the blender.

Anyone have experience with these new-fangled things? If so please contact me!!!
 
Kind of late to this party, but I noticed you said you had both Norton and Windows firewalls running. I'd disable the Windows firewall. You don't really need 2, and similar to antivirus programs, they may create conflicts.

What brand and what is the problem? It should be recognized by the Windows as soon as it's plugged in. It may require a special driver at that point, but other than that it shouldn't be a hassle.

Did you get an installation CD?
 
It's a Belkin 4-port. I've researched the issue and it simply will not work. USB audio devices are apparently not compatible although I haven't been able to figure out why, technically, they don't work with it. The DAC works fine on a hard wire and Windows sees it ont he wireless hub, but something about the way this wireless USB hub works prevents the drivers from being assigned properly. There is one wireless USB hub that will work with such devices but it's $350. I think I'm moving on to USB over WiFi, even though I despise WiFi for anything other than sitting outside with a laptop browsing the web.

Like I don't have enough car projects to deal with, now I'm spending day after day working out high resolution wireless audio solutions. *sigh*
 
Not all golf GPS units will work with every hub, so they're not the only device that may have issues.
