problems removing studs

I'm trying to remove the studs from a nice used manifold I bought from Tony. I'm trying the double nut method, and its not working. I tighten them both down then try to remove the stud by turning the bottom nut... but there both just spinning? How do I get them to lock?

What I have done is using two wrenches, one on the top nut and the other on the bottom nut, (A little dexterity is needed) as you keep the top nut tightening while you move the bottom nut anti-clockwise...moving both anti-clockwise... it's tough to 'splain. try it a few times and you'll get the knack...

If there is room, you might also try a lock (split washer) bwtween the two nuts... that is IF the other technique comes to no avail...
 
Heat lotsa heat. I did some work this weekend at a friend who is a mechanic. It's amazing how much faster things come out when you loosen them up with a torch.
 
Wow, I went out to Princess Auto (Canada's equivalent of HF) and bought a stud remover on sale for $8.99. I'd sprayed the studs earlier to day with PB blaster, I thought I should probably let the PB blaster soak over night, but its always fun to try out a new tool so I thought I'd give it a quick try before bed.

This thing is magic! Studs came right out with only a little resistance at the start.
 
Good job. I should look into one of these but there isn't a HF near me at all. I'd have to shop online for this kinda stuff. I'm going to check the local Sears and see if they have one.
 
All you folks <span style="color: #3333FF"><span style="font-weight: bold">SHOULD</span></span> take a look in "Various Articles" at the <span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="color: #009900">BEST</span></span> Stud Removers <span style="font-weight: bold">MADE</span> and that work the best of anything I have <span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="color: #990000">EVER</span></span> used/seen!! :winner1:

sears does have stud removers.
 
So which is the best?
 
Stud remover tools for different size of bolts are generally available to borrow from your local Brit car repair shop.
Otherwise one may be puchased at your local auto parts store generally for under $10.00
They really work and to think I laughed at the suggestion that I use a stud remover when I had some recalcitrant bolts on a thermostat housing.

I've a Snap-On "adjustable" and several AST Tools "sprag" type, sized ones. Can't (or ~shouldn't) be without 'em.
 
Vice grips work well in a pinch as well. lol
